ATI or Mosby results
We are taking our mental health ATI next week. We did two last semester. It seems in our last semester before we grad, we have 5 ATI tests to take along with our reg exams. This is supposed to be a better prep for NCLEX. THis is only the second year that our school has mandated these.

Medical Assistants
I have been a medical assitant for eight years, also an EMT. I am in my second year of nursing school (RN). While I can say that my knowledge that I have accumulated has helped me greatly, where some of my fellow students struggle... I would go the CNA route it will help you so much more in nursing school. The first semester should be easier. You will also be able to observe the nurses and how they interact with and care for the patients. That is all very worthwhile knowledge. All of the bedmaking, bath, etc. you would know how to do where I had to learn it. MA's work with the doctors, and depending on where you work you may only book appointments and do vital signs, or where I work in pediatrics, you might give shots, medications, any anything the doctor has trained you to do. That is they key word, training. I can only work with a patient if there is a doctor is the office as a medical assistant. With my EMT liscence I can do more, I can also work in hospitals as er techs etc. You schooling is different also. I am in california, and the MA school is 18mo to two years. If you go to a private school like Western Career College, be sure the other school accept the credit as transfer. You may find y ou have to retake classes. Who has time for that. A big difference that I see is I work from the doctors point of view. That is what I am used to. I now have to kick over and see things from a nursing point of view. Taking care of the patient, advocating for the patient. In my place of employment I have always done that. I used to work for the ARMY in Europe, and it is something I always have done. Sorry to have this run on hope it helps you.....

Excelsior Exams?
You know, I just studied from the recommended textbook, and the Excelsior study guide, and after 8weeks, I work full time, got an A. Boy was I shocked. But I did learn in my intro to nursing program, (about the only thing I got out of it) was how to pick out what was important, and really read the questions. Narrow down the answer, and pick the best answer. Hope it helps.

Anyone work for Sutter Health?
Alta Bates Medical Center is located on Telegraph and regents in Berkley. I met a few people who work there, mostly emt's in the ED and OB dept. Seem pretty nice. I work in priv. ped's office and our docs do rounds at that hospital. They have a few campuses around. http://WWW.altabatesmedicalcenter.com I don't usually have any trouble getting what i need unless its a newborn rec, discharge summary. I know ob docs that deliver there, and generally our patients seem to have good things to say about the hospital itself. CPMC is on the other side of the bay, and we do send patients there for tx also.

For those of you that are a nurse and those of you who call yourself a nurse!!
Where I work, our advice "nurse" is a md from the phillipines who has not passed the us boards twice. I have tried numerous times to get everyone to quit calling us nurses, and if asked i say we do not have any nurses in this office only medical assistants, and 1 EMT. But I am not going to loose my job over it, I just correct people when I hear it.

How do Nurses feel about CMAs?
In my are (San Fransico bay - east) most of the medical assistant programs are between 8mo to year. Most are AA degrees. I work in a pediatric group with five pediatricians. We have no nurses on staff LPN or RN. I supervise 5 ma,and provide externship training for schools in our area. I am a EMT, have worked for the U.S. Army as an medical assistant for 4 years, and a current RN student. As anEMT and the back office supervisor I must triage anyone that walks in (even though we don't have walk in clinic). As an MA i can gather information only. I love my job and most of our patients. Our practice is well respected in the area, and our doctors definately beleive in working with the less privelaged population in our area. Interestingly when i was hired i asked why no nurses? We can't afford them with the salary requirements in this area. Our group belongs to an HMO and we usually get7 -10$ per month per patient as capitation. No matter if we see the patiet 1 time or 12 times that month. Really good reimbursement. over 40% of our patient base are on state sposored medial programs. MA's will never replace nurses but I do see a need for this career field. I think the healthcare industry needs all parts of the equation to work together, each in their own scope of practice, and as a way to start in the medical field while ever expanding your knowledge base, and scope of practice. In our office the only ones who still try to call us nurses are our docs, and some of the front office staff. None of my staff ever calls theselves a nurse, and always refers to themselves a Dr.so and so's assistant. Two of my staff are in nursing school now and it is difficult with my supervisor to arrange work schedules but i beleive it to be very important to work out. My goal in providing extenship to the schools is building on their knowledge base and reinforcing their skills while challenging them to think. Think about now, where they want to go in the nursing field, encouraging them to go for the RN. Some of them come out of school right on top o their skills, wanting to learn and then some you wonder what they did in school. We interview all our candidates or externship just like a job intervew. I am sorry that this is so long, but as I said I love what I am doing and where I am going. Happy Holidays!

Is Microbiology really that scary
Just took my last two finas tonight. Lab and Lecture. We have an awesome teacher. She teaches many different micro classes. I have learned so much in this class, course never want to eat again! Our nursing micro class was almost exactly the same as the reg. micro class. They are always full and very hard to get into. But if I want to I now have all the skills to enter into a lab and work as a tech. So if I get tired of being and EMT and a MedicalAssistant while Im in school for rn, i have another job option. Very cool class!!!
