  1. I just found out the cost of that school. I think I'm going to pass LOL
  2. Wow thats a long day for me as I work a fulltime job. Then again in another program with pre-reqs, i guess it would be the same. Is it 2 yr?
  3. Could someone please tell me how many evenings a week and from what time to what time the evening classes in St Pauls are? Also is it a 2 yr? I looked at their website but they have no information listed. Thanks :) Evie
  4. Thanks so much Dee!
  5. Hi. For now, I'm only in for the pre reqs as far as I know. I have to go down to the school on Friday to take one writing test and speak to an advisor. I will tell you that if getting into the Nursing School turns into jumping through hoops I'd rather spend more money and just go to a private less competitive school.
  6. 1stloveistobeanurse, i'm in the same boat. i've been procrastinating back and forth. i finally just decided to go do the pre reqs. i can make up my mind when thats almost done lol.. good luck!
  7. Hi everyone. So I applied to BMCC and was accepted . I have to take one other test because I had applied to Bronx Community College for the LPN in 2006 but never went. I am going to the school next week to get all my registration done.. I was told that there are a bunch of Pre Reqs I have to do first. I guess what I wanted to know is how long does it take to complete the pre reqs on an evening schedule. And once i do, how long until I actually start Nursing School itself?
  8. dorothea hopfer school of nursing in Mount Vernon has an evening course with a similar schedule. I am going to apply
  9. I ws referring to the teacher who did the evening classes not the entire school. I think I wrote that in my post..There is a very good daytime teacher hos name I cannot remember The teacher I was referring towas fired shortly after I finished my course. I think it is safe to assume that alot of other people were dis satisfied. In the nursing home where I did my clinicals (St vincent dePaul in the Bronx) I also had a very good CNA that i was assigned to but the majority of the CNAs working there were not graduates of Manhattan Institute. The teacher hwo showedus around seemed to have had some sort of person vendeta with one of the Heads in St Vincent. She talked about it all the time. All in all, I ended up doing the PCT course somewhere else and was much happier
  10. I went to Big Apple Training on 241 Street in the Bronx for my EKG?Phlebotomy class. That course was $750 and $120 for the books. I'm pretty sure that the CNA is the same or cheaperThey have a payment plan available . $120 a week for 5 weeks.. I really like the teacher s there
  11. I cannot tell you about Florida but NY is easy.. The best advice I have for you is to take your time and think before you do anything in the skills part. Good luck to you
  12. I totally agree .. I took the CNA course before going into nursing to test the waters.. I went in telling everyone that I didnt want to work Nursing Homes. After 2 days into clinical I loved it and I now know that I want to go on to nursing school and I want to work in a nursing home. I would highly suggest that someone take the CNA course to see if Nursing is for them If you cant take alittle doo doo and pee pee, maybe you should re-think your decision
  13. Unles you will be doing Day Classes, PLEASE dont go to this school. I finished the evening course and clinicals and can tell you that we were not prepared for the skills test.. We spent the majority of our time reading out of some stupid book.. Its obvious that the evening teacher is in a rish to get out of there so she lets you out an hour early.. This time could be spent doing skills... Additionally when we went for clinicals we were told by the people in the nursing home that Man Institute students arent allowed to do much due to the fact that we are not trained correctly..The claim to have Job Placement.... Yeah sure, it'll cost you $45 but they dont tell you that in the beginning either The manniquens and equiptment are dirty and outdated. Im about to take my EKG/Phlebotomy classes but I am going to Big Apple Training instead. There are plenty of schools with the same schedule as Manhattan Institute and cheaper too
  14. My job for the past 17 years has been a Property Mgr/Real Estate Broker so I can tell you first hand about the rents. They are REDICULOUS!!! I manage 6 buildings in Manhattan. 2 in the wesst 80s, 2 in the west 100s and 2 in east harlem. Small studios can start as much as 1800. I make a pretty good salary net 45k and will not spend my entire paycheck to pay my rent.I grew up on the upper west side of Manhattan but I have lived in the Bronx for the past 10 years. The Bronx gets a really bad rep and people who dont know it would feel intimidated by it. But you can still get a really good deal there and you can make it to Manhattan in 45 minutes or less. Same goes for certain parts of Queens, Brooklyn etc. Manhattan has been WAY out of price since the early 1990s but it seems to be leveling off a bit.Expect to sacrifice space for living in a "she she" area if you want to live in Manhattan.
  15. CNAs cannot draw blood or do EKGs unless they continue on in school and take the phlebotomy/ekg course and are not permitted to do foleys in NY
  16. UGH dont even bother to go to this school.. I took the evening course here and just completed my clinicals yesterday. In class we did mostly reading and were not properly shown how to complete the skills. The teacher ripped us off in time always letting us out an hour early. GREAT!! you might say but you will have a change of heart once you get to clinicals. Students of this school are considered a BIG JOKE in the nursing home where clinicals are done and have a reputation of noy being properly trained. We were in there with Hostos and believe me, Hostos had alot more indepth training and were sent to the better floors to actually do and learn something.. All we got to do was make beds feed patient and follow a cna around . Sure you will pass your clinicals your written exam and if you're lucky your state boards but you won't have a clue as to what to do once you're put out there. I plan on taking the PCT course but will give my money to a school that will train me thoroughly
  17. I can honestly say I enjoyed my clinicals. Except for a few grumpy people it was GREAT!!!! Warning to people who want to go to Manhattan Institute... DONT!!! Dont waste your time here. I paid good money to take the cna course. What a joke. First of all you pay for 3 hours a night. The teacher is in such a rush to get out of there she lets you out an hour early.. Whats wrong with that you might ask? Well I just finished my clinicals and knew ABSOLUTELY nothing when it came to the skills. The teacher rushed thru them for one night. The majority of time was spent with our noses in the book and taking stupid quizzes. The nursing home they will send you to for clinicals is nice but all of the cnas there will tell you that you were not trained correctly.. God forbid I had to take my state bords tomorrow. I would pass the written no problem but I willbe the first to admit that I was not trained correctly in the skills which is the most important part. I plan on taking the Patient Care Tech course but I refuse to give another dime to Manhattan Institute. My advice is spend alittle more and get the training you need
  18. YOU GO GIRL!!! Congrats!!! Question.. Did they only give you 2 skills? I was told it was 5.. Please tell me it was only 2 LOL
  19. Hi.. I just finished the CNA course in Manhattan Institute. It was pretty good.. I feel I got my moneys worth.. The only thing I didnt like about it was the condition of their restrooms and how hot the classroom got at times
  20. Yes.. I passed my final with a 91 and have my clinicals scheduled for the week of the 4th.. Serenity, which school will you be doing your PCT in? I would like to stay with Manhattan Institute but if I find somewhere cheaper I may switch. I called another school but I didnt like the "salesman" mentality of it. If you can't tell me the price of the course over the phone, I am NOT wasting my time... Ahhh skills.. I feel comfortable with the bedpan, handwashing, occupied bed, ambulating, drainage bag.. I feel I really need work with peri and cath care . Question, did your school tell you that you should bring someone with hair and without weaves, locks or braids just in case they ask you to do haircare? They told me that in my school which sounds SO stupid since real people are bald, ond have weaves, locks and braids... UGH..
  21. i tried to do this thru workforce and they wouldnt help me because they said since i am employed in the real state feild and thats what i have expereince in, they will only pay for me to go to real estate school.. ***!!! why would i need to go to school to learn somethiing i already know??? anywho, please tell me if i was wrongly informed,
  22. I know Ive been MIA these past weeks. Tonite I finallly take my finals. I am feeling confident about the written tests but am not so sure about the skills. There is really so much to learn and practice. Not knowing which skills you will get on the state boards doesnt help LOL..Next stop, PCT course... How is everyone else doing?
  23. botom II think you should focus on one at a time.. Spreading yourself out too thin could result in not giving your best.. have my finals tonite and had planned on starting my PCT on May 11th. But with not having set clinical dates or state board dates, I dont want to commit to something new without finishing up the CNA route COMPLETELY.. Know what I mean?
  24. Hi everyone. I havent been around since starting school.. One this for sure is it WILL keep you busy LOL.. Im on my 3rd with with a midterm coming up on Thursday. So far I like it alot.. There is a good group of people in my class and all seem serious so theres not alot of distraction. We start the skills part tonite. Lucky me.. I got picked for bedpan LOL
  25. Hi Jasmine.. I am in Manhattan Institute in the night class.. We have a teacher they call Ms B.. Shes ok though I feel sometimes that she rushes thru stuff.. Is it true that the clinicals anre dont in St Vincent de Paul up in the Bronx? How is it? Any tips on to how to prepare myself?
