as DON/ADON ....do you help or hinder your staff?
i am so soory that you do not feel support from your DON. As a New DON myself it particulary bothers me. I came to a facility that has had at least 7 DON's in 18 months. The staff here didn" t feel supported and rightly so. THeir boss was the DON of the week. I finally got all my manager positions filled and then told the managementthat our staff was just as important as our patients. The staff were really surprised to hear I would excuse unit managers from meetings if they needed them on the floor. THey tried it and found out I was telling the truth. Everyone need to be held accountable and the managment has to be consistent wiht everyone. i am starting to see the fruits of my labor and I have been there almost 4 months . Hope things get better for you soon-

LTC big dogs at the top
don't give up. The elderly truly need all of us. WE become their family . In June we had to evauate our 110 bed facility due to flooding . SOme of the residents had family members show up and wanted to take them home and our residents would not go - because we knew how to take care of them. To those at the top who abuse the system or only appear to be in it for the money _ I say " what goes around comes around". Long term care is a specialty and we are the one who will be changing it in the future.

LTC big dogs at the top
be careful what you generalize. I'm one of our top administration in a small not for profit home. Lst week some of my staff saw me getting in and out of a limo as I was taken to "jail "for Muscular dystrophy. and then had to recruit donations for bail. Some of my nurses make more than myself , DOn and administrator( also a nurse). Weekly I opurchase things for residents .60% of our population is medicaid , but they still like to have nice things or extra things. Not everyone at the top is evil or just out for money

MDS Coordinator salaries
I'm in delaware and make more the $30 per hour. I am considered management and have on call as well as responsibility to oversee QI. I have 5 years exp as a LTC manager prior to this position. Right now I have to also review referrals for our MEd A beds ( 23 with an average LOS 10-14 days) and help keep our RUG scores up. WE are looking for an admission/discharge nurse so hopefully the referral piece will soon be gone.

Expecting too much???
well here's my 2 cents. I manage a 45 be unit-23 Med A 22 LTC . WE have 5 nurses on days(12) hour shifts This is broken down into a charge nurse, 3 for the med A patients( grp of 7, 8, 10) and one for the remaining 20 LTC. I have personally worked the groups and think those on the skilled groups are spoiled. I have experienced the same frustations - running out of meds because someone didn't order refill., hearing patients complain in a meeting they had to wait for the pain med until the nurse got to them and find it all disgusting. MAny of my new nurses simply don't seem to care, or be able to think critically at all. It is'e the residents who seem to suffer. It is very frustrating
