  1. TOEFLE is only good for reading and writing. So many people whose first language is not English have difficulty with the idiom , or local colloquialism. or for those of you with word limitation Slang. It's a dodgy business when people cannot distinguish or understand metaphor. Puts patients at risk, Conversational English is possiblty better to aim at, at least you will be able to understand the locals. I asked an >>> Doctor (no country mentioned) if his last maid had died from exhaustion because he kept clicking his fingers at me and demanding that I attend to him yesterday Know what his answer was Yes you guessed correctly " She's not dead" AAAAAAAH!:smackingf
  2. Get a grip girl............... Age is a thing it means nothing. One old guy here in Australia finished his PHd on steam engines, I met an old lady 85 finishing her Masters, I'm 55 and finishing my Masters in Ed Have you ever heard of lifelong learning. Why do you need our opinion it's irelevent what we thinh it is what you think that matters. If you are feelong old at 26 what on earth will you be loke when you are my age. mmom51:rolleyes:
  3. I think this role play is an excellent idea as it is so difficult to teach this subject. My own recollections alone remind me of this. What an innovative person fgoff is congratulations I hope you don't mind if I steat your idea, I will of course give you credit Regards mmom51
  4. hey i know the feeling, there is an agism attitude about. ignore it .............it's the opinions of the ignorant who have blinkers on about learning. what about lifelong learning. we learn 'till the day we die.i did my bachelor of arts (hons) and qualified at 51 years. i am now ...... older and am finishing my masters in adult ed. always remember [color=#454545]"no one can make you feel inferior without your consent" [color=#454545]eleanor roosevelt[color=#454545], 'this is my story,' 1937 ffice:smarttags" />[color=#454545]us[color=#454545] diplomat & reformer (1884 - 1962) [color=#454545]and most importantly [color=#454545][color=#454545]"the only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance" ffice:office" /> [color=#454545]socrates[color=#454545] greek philosopher in [color=#454545]athens[color=#454545] (469 bc - 399 bc) [color=#454545]regards [color=#454545]mmom51 [color=white]
  5. It is a new experience , it is a valuable skill, there is absolutely no harm in learning how to take a manual b/p. While she is at it tell her what it means for example the importance of knowing what diastolic and systolic actually mean, how high is high .. how low is low. the usual tacit knowledge. What if she gets stuck in an emergency situation where there is no power... it happens..... Buy her one, they are not that expensive. Regards mmom51
  6. The last piece of advice is good but what concerns me here is where did the notion of CARE go. A little bit of maths here CARE/profit=0. Not that I want to be a Mother Theresa clone but expecting nurses to self care so soon after surgery is plain. Is there an ethical council/department at that place???. On the bright side you possibly got the best care by doing self care, well it sounds like it
  7. Hi Harold Good luck in America you seem to have got good advice from the answers. It is hard going to a new place but mix with the locals and learn the informal language. I am interested in this topic as I facilitate young neophytes from China and it is so difficult for them too. I am so glad I got on to this thread because i got a new connection by way of one of your advisors which I will try and contact. Sorry I cannot help you more. Iam from Australia so am not too familiar with the American culture
  8. If you feel victimised keep a diary. There should be a clause in your OH&S policy for zero tolerace for bullying and harrassment. Reflect on your relationship with her/him. Confront the person with your feelings on the behaviour. Don't accuse. Simply request a meeting andtell the person how you feel. This is a non-threatening approach. Perception is not always reality. Maybe you got it wrong. Reflect on the meetings and assessments you have had. It is possible you made errors, got mixed up. Goodluck and remember there is always good in most people sometime you have to dig a bit deeper. Don't be swayed by others opinion. Keep your own council. It is hard to do
  9. No you are not too old. When I was doing my under graduate degree I met a lady (85years) doing a Masters degree at the library. She was using a magnifying glass to see the fine print. I was 46 years old then. I am now doing my Masters in Adult education and nearly finished (I am now 55). Remember the notion of lifelong learning. We never stop learning. Keep going mate anyway you are only a spring chicken compared to me. I say forget that paradigm of age it is totally irrelevant. Look at the president of the world bank who mastered the cello only a few years ago and now gives concerts. There are so many role modules out there.
  10. :studyowl: hi i am doing self reflection research on my facilitation skills as a community nurse for my research assignment for my ma in adult ed. my reflection is on how i facilitated neophytes from countries who do not use english as a first language. i feel that i may be a tad eurocentric and wish to improve my skills and endevour to gain their confidence in me as a facilitator for learning about community nursing.the term ace+ is used here for neophytes who do not use english as a first language as opposed to (nesb) non english speaking background which is felt to be demeaning to these students who have two or more languages. brown’s (1996) study for example is a descriptive and challenging study because it touches on cultural values, language difficulties and educators’ ethical dilemmas. which focuses on a minority group of students studying at undergraduate level in a office here in australia one interesting aspect of this study is the author’s stance on the term nesb meaning non english speaking backgrounds which is perceived to be negative terminology. the preferred terminology is now additionally cultured english plus (ace+). the author suggests that these students have additional cultural influences and the focus should not be placed on language in isolation. english is included in this acronym because additionally cultured university students can communicate in various degrees of accuracy, and the plus at the end indicates the students' ability to speak another language in addition to english. this attitudinal stance puts these students in a different and more positive light. what i need is some ideas and advise on how best i can improve my practice to ensure learning and also to help me understand and ambrace their culture. most of the neophytes come from china.i realise that their cultural stance on education and learning is different from the typical western education ideology and this proves difficult. i need to find a happy medium which demonstrates a respect to their culture. can anybody lend some ideas?
