Hello i've been a nurse for almost 3 1/2 months on a pediatirc unit that has mix of teens health issues, renal/dialysis, some behavioral issues and asthma. I like my pt population but working on this floor has taken a toll on my sanity and makes me question if i should choose a different type of nursing. I just finished orientation and i feel like it wasn't enough and no one talked to me about extending it or if i ws ready to come off. I felt like it didn't prepare me enough. I'm just sick of getting rolled eyes when i need help, dealing with rude nurisng assistants that act like you asked them for the first born child, when u ask them for assistance, and the crazy work schedule. Even though i am a new nurse i was thinking of taking classes to get my certificate in school nursing. I am planning to stick with my job for another year to gain more confidence in my skillsand experience, but have my certificate on the back burner. I'm not saying school nursing is easy by any means but i'll never know if its a better career area for me if i don't try. Does anyone think this is a bad idea, have opinions, or think a year and a 1/2 of nursing isn't enough to be a school nurse?

on my pediatric med/psych unit its about 8-10 weeks.....which is about 3 days a week. Most is on days and the rest of nights.....I'm almost done!

I too have 2nd thoguhts about becoming a nurse. I hated school i thought the teachers were not supoortive and ignorant to us students and i thought "oh when i'm workng it won't be this way" Then I studied my behind off and i got my license last week. I've been working for a month and a half it wasn't what i thought. I'm a pediatric nurse and i feel like i'm not responsible or smart enough to take care of these kids. And my preceptorship is a joke. i'm not being taught, I'm being told what to do and not being told the reasons/rationales... And if i asks questions my preceptor gets fustrated and does it herself. I think i move too slow (which i do, to not make mistakes) for her b/c she roles her eyes,etc. I feel like i want out of nursing. I feel like i'm disorganized and i don't have a clue whats going on and that i made a huge mistake. I love nursing but right now i feel so helpless with it.

omg lol.... the same exact thing happened to me i took mine yesterday and i got lost 3 times while going to the site and i came in all out of breath b/c i was late and i ran to the office. the receptionist smiled and told me i would get 75 and i did and passed..... i was like i don't think i am but i'm glad you do. i thought i would fail too b/c i was so upset about being late. and i prayed inside my head the whole time..... craziness

hey i took mine yesterday too and it ended with 75 questions. I thought the questions were hard as well. I found out i passed today but yesterday b/f i knew for sure i had a theory. My questions were hard no doubt but some i answers i was confident in and i thought well if i'm not passing within the 1st 75 then i think they would make me do more questions and not fail me at the 75 mark b/c i answered some correctly. This theory helped me get through the night so i wouldn't worry myself to death...lol Hope this helps

You'll be fine I stopping studying like you b/c i was worn out and couldn't take anymore NCLEX practice. I took my test on monday and passed. i was really worried about forgeting everything but everything fell into place.... you'll see.... good luck!!!! I say an NCLEX prayer for you

Hey leslasic.... I graduated in july and i took Kaplan in the last couple of weeks of school. So maybe take it in dec upon graduation.... i wouldn't take it too early b/c the online stuff expires. For instance, I took the class in july and had access to the online stuff unitl oct 5th and i took my test on Oct 2.... so since u want to take the NCLEX in feb or march.... I wouldn't take Kaplan just now but in dec so you will have the materials available.

hey everyone i passed the nclex!!!!!! with only 75 questions!!!!! i can't believe it i really had doubts b/c i didn't think i studied enough. i actually knew more than i thought while taking the test. thanks for everyone's prayers and support. :smiley_aa

If time runs out Theycore the test using the "rule of 60" Therefore if you run out of time the will only score your last 60 quesitions and i believe they have to be 100% correct to pass...... Good luck i have my fingers crossed for u.

I'm taking the NCLEX on Oct 2nd (next mon) and i'm in my last week and i can't seem to study anymore. I took Kaplan and have been doing all the questions, reading rationales and studying some content. But i totally didn't get give my all. I think i need better studying habits and more discipline but I just can't make myself do it. And on top of that i sarted working 2 weeks ago and now i'm too tired to study when i get home. Some days i feel confident and that i can pass. and then i read stories about people that study like crazy and still fail. Am i doomed to fail too?

Good luck..... i shadowed on a infant/toddler med/surg unit and i got the job. I took initiative and dove in they were really impressed. They wanna see how you fit on the floor and interact with staff.....I was told that if you got to the shadowing step your interviewer is impressed with you and in most cases you get the job. So relax and i'm sure you'll do great!!!!

Yes, I recently graduated from a BSN/RN program and I always had trouble with HS math and science and would get c's and d's. In fact one of my HS teachers told me i could never be a nurse. While in College/nursing school I got had tutors for my chemistry and bio classes and got B's. I did well in statistics and when doing dosage calculations in school i'd do it three times to make sure there are no errors. With that being said yes you can get through Nursing school too. If you have trouble in nursing school get tutors/help early.

I just started my new job as a RN and I'm still on oreintation and start on the unit next week. One of my biggest worries is giving report on patients. Ever since i was in nursing school, i would be so nervous, blank out, and not know what to say when my instructors asked me about my patients. I would just throw out random assessments about the patients i'm assigned. Its one of my weakest skills, if not the weakest. Is it normal to be so scared of a simple skill like giving oral report for change of shift?
