- Where are all you SC nurses?

When we were younger new flegling nurses :D
As a nurse in the States, I am intrigued by the idea of cardboard bedpans. Please tell me more. And glass IV bottles, we still occasionally use them.

Beyond the "5 Rights" of medication administration...
We use computerized med administration (MedAdmin) so I scan each med as I am putting it in the cup, pulling it up in the syringe, etc. By using the bar code system, I can be certain I have the right patient, drug, and time just by scanning. The system will let you know if you don't. Of course, that doesn't replace nursing judgement, but it helps to have a back up. As far as what is safe for the patients weight, allergies, etc, the computer also alerts you to double check if the computer detects anything. Again, though, the computer is not fool-proof, but for the most part, I think it is much safer.

Is night shift easier?.....
I love nights for all the reasons mentioned above. Less administration, less doctors, etc. It is not *easier* on nights per se, just better, lol. Contrary to popular belief, pts do not just "sleep all night". For the most part though, nights are less crazy than days. As far as meds, there are a few less meds to give, but not that much less. Pts still have their home meds, and plus antibiotics and stuff is around the clock.

how do you describe.....
I personally love Pediatrics because I love kids, and I want to make their time in the hospital as pleasent as it can be. I don't want them to develop a negative perception of healthcare workers at such a tender age. As said above, children are just so much more resilent than adults. I just enjoy kids so much more.

scalp iv flow direction
Thanks for posting this. I am never sure with scalp veins, but I have heard that they should point to the center of the body, too. I have actually only done one myself, I have assisted with a few, though.

Visitation
My hospital is one of the most relaxed I know on visiting hours. Basically, anything goes that is within reason. Both parents can stay, and although the operator announces visiting hours are over at 9, no one listens, and unless someone is really disturbing a patient, we don't make them leave.

Is your place of employment offering you the flu vaccine?
I was able to get mine easily from employee health, and we have it on the unit in order to get all of us vaccinated.
