What do you love about the OR? & what do you hate?
Thanks for the links. I can definitely see that there are negatives to working in the OR from reading those links. So I would like to hear the other side of the coin now: :dncgcpd::nmbrn::rckn: TELL ME THE GREAT THINGS, THE POSITIVES, THE REASONS YOU REALLY ENJOY WORKING IN THE OR......

What do you love about the OR? & what do you hate?
I have a couple of yrs experience in cardiac unit and Im considering a move to the OR. I think I would like the OR setting, I enjoyed my time during clinicals when I was able to observe in the OR. The hospital is offering "periOp 101" training thru AORN. My current job isnt bad, lots of good and some bad. Sometimes we are floated to med/surg floors, which I truly cant stand. But I work with some great people and Im somewhat reluctant to leave, Im leaning toward applying for the transfer..... So tell me what you really like and what you really dont like. Thanks!

Have you ever taken care of a famous pt?
A friend of mine works at a hospital here that is where the players of a local NBA team go for diagnostic tests. The hospital employees are restricted from requesting autographs. When one HUGELY popular player was scheduled to come in, someone left a sharpie pen and notebook in a restroom for this VERY TALL player to find--which he did. Not only did he sign every page in the notebook. He also signed the mirror and signed a bottle of soap/cleaner and pulled off a bunch of toilet paper and signed that as well!!!!!!!! Needless to say this guy has a sense of humor:chuckle

MDC- any one waiting?
Have you tried calling the medical campus? They can tell you when they are going to start sending the letters out. When I applied in May for the fall term, I got my letter June 14th. My GPA was 3.75 Good luck.

Would becoming bilingual be useful in nursing?
Si!!!!!! In my neck of the woods -Miami, FL--- more people than not either are bilingual or speak only spanish. I can understand a bit more than I can speak it. I have some tapes that I listen to in my car--"learn spanish in your car"" tapes--I dont know how they came up with that name-- They are helpful. I also noticed the same course that Nurseterr77 noted--spanish for healthcare workers-- I think i might be taking that class after I graduate.

Anybody buy their own private insurance?
I have health insurance thru NSNA--(Nat'l Student Nurse Assoc) It isnt the greatest--only covers accidents and illness--no preventative (routine office visits, mammo, etc). The premium is about $1200/quarter for my husband and I. But I would rather have this than nothing at all. I did a lot of looking around and settled on this because you dont have to be prequalified and whatnot. Im over 40 and in Dade County, (Miami) Florida,==Insurance of ANY kind is unbelievable here. Cant wait till I have decent insurance through my future employer

Problem with recurring cellulitis
Sorry to hear your having this problem. You didnt mention what type of doctor is treating you for this. My husband had cellulitis a few years ago and his GP totally missed the dx. He prescribed topical creams, then a week later-oral antibiotics. Finally, my DH got a 2nd opinion from an infectious disease doc--who admitted him to the hospital for 3 days of IV antibiotics. A total of 2 weeks had lapsed before we got the 2nd opinion. When I called the Infectious disease doctor, they got my husband in right away because of the signs and symptoms he was having. Im afraid to think what would have happened if we didnt get a 2nd opinion. Good luck and keep us posted

Does anyone wear MBT shoes?
Here is the thread for the article I mentioned......... http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/living/health/15602330.htm I have to admit I am a huge cynic (sp?) when it comes to pretty much anything. That is why I thought I would post here, to see if anyone has had similar results to the newspaper reporter. My back and feet are always aching and IF I had any cellulite (which of course, I don't) :uhoh21: !!!!, losing some fat and dimples and not having a sore back and burning feet would be win-win.

Does anyone wear MBT shoes?
I just read an article in the Miami Herald about these shoes. The reporter wore them for 1 month and wrote an article for each week. They help reduce cellulite --She lost 1" from each of her thighs!!!! Yep! One month and she lost 1" on one thigh and more than 1" on the other! Says her pants are fitting her better:monkeydance: . They also help with posture and backache. The huge drawback is the pricetag $250!!!! They are kind of funky looking, with a rocker type bottom. I think I will go try on a pair and see how they feel.. Anyway, I would love to hear about anyone's experiences with these. I checked out their website.... www.mbt-info.com Very interesting.. :wink2:

Preceptorships in the NICU in Miami
I do know of a nurse that was hired right into the NICU as a new grad. Keep in mind she has worked there for 13 yrs now. From what I understand, that is still possible. I think all new grads/new hires go thru a 3 month precept and then apply to the unit where they want to go. If hired at that unit, they undergo additiional precept. in that unit for addtl. amount of time. I am trying to collect information on this as go. I will graduate in 12/07, and Im possibly interested in the NICU.....

I Hate Scrub Pants!!!
Im right there with you. I like the Dickies hip flip, but the regular length are borderline too short and the tall length are too, too long. Plus, the small are "this close" to being too small, but the medium are friggin HUGE!!!!!! There is room for another small person inside of these!! Im afraid if I wash them, the small will no longer fit my heiny and become capri pants! Or if I gain just one pound of the expected "10 to 20 lbs" we are predicted to gain in nursing school I will be SOL. Yes, I shouldnt be worrying about this trivial stuff and I should go open a book, I know. and dont even get me started on the white ones we have to wear for clinicals--

See-thru white scrubs
Well, I have found that the lovely white top we have to wear will be covering the majority of my "south side" which is nice since my only choice of undies for the last 15 years or so has been the thong. Butt to be on the safe side I think I will buy some beige boyshort undies. Im sure all those that might get a glimpse will be so glad. But I really do think that anyone that requires you to wear clothing that is see-thru should be prepared to deal with the consequences!!! One of my original ideas was to buy 7 pairs of unides that said "THURSDAY" accross the bum!!!!!

See-thru white scrubs
:angryfire So I bought my flipping white scrubs today that I have to wear to clinicals, and as Im checking out the dimples that are visible on my bum, (through the lovely white pants) in the dressing room mirror, I started to think that who ever came up with WHITE SEE-THRU scrub pants must have been some old pervert or an angry, mean, bad person!!!!!! Then I got an idea:idea: !! Let me know what you think. All of us that are required to wear the whites, should buy some REALLY, REALLY BRIGHT colored undies. I mean crazy stuff, like blue and pink polka dots, or the victoria secret/fredricks panties that have provocative sayings on the hiney. Or the Joe Boxer smiley face guy on the derriere. Then, when the higher ups tell us we cant wear pretty undies with polka dots or black lace, or sexy garter belts, then we might be able to convince them that white is not practical for most of us. What do you say? Shall we start a revolution?

Pt refused to leave!
:yeahthat: Im in nursing school now, but I have worked in the health care field for many years. I know that ignorance and stupidity come in many colors and flavors. I have never let that affect my treatment of patients. In fact I will not tolerate the mistreatment of any patient due to their ability to pay or their crappy insurance or their poor manners/attitude, etc. The posters that feel that we dont have the right to feel disgust for those who dont feel like holding a job, should drive by the free housing devolpments and take a look at the SUVs with shiny rims and cadillacs and check out the designer purses and shoes and sunglasses that a lot of those "in need" are wearing and get back to me. There are so many people that need assistance that dont get it because they cant endure all the jumping through hoops required by the govt. and find it easier to do without until they get back on their feet. There are so many people that make sure they know how to get whatever they can get from the government-(read you and me) and they make sure that their children and grandchildren learn the ropes at a young age. I often wonder how so many of the people that are "unable to work" are obese- obviously they are puchasing and consuming quite a bit of food. Hmmm, or maybe they are all suffering from a morbid disease that doesnt permit them to work, only stay home watching Jerry Springer and waiting for a ride to the ER in their social worker's new Escalade when they want to deliver their new baby. Im tired of seeing the rampant misuse and abuse of our taxes. And I am offended when others tell me that Im wrong for feeling this way. Perhaps you are too far removed to see the reality. Im not.

What exactly is a "pinning ceremony"??
I keep hearing about "pinning", is this in addition to graduation? Im a bit confused on this. Do we wear nurses' uniforms and caps:nurse: instead of the regualr cap and gown? I was accepted for this fall term and I wont really need to worry about this for some time, but Im still a bit curious. I posted this question on another forum, but it went unanswered, I think.:imbar Hope to hear soon and solve the mystery:coollook: Thanks!
