  1. My aunt was watching the news last night and said that they may close the nursing program at St Philip's due to the low amount of students able to pass the state certification for nursing. You may want to look into it just to make sure you aren't wasting your time waiting.
  2. :welcome: The best advice I can give you is stay away from the east and west sides of town. You might want to look at the city website and maybe you can get some info there. If there is a reference to the medical center area, that is where the majority of the hosptials are located.
  3. I saw an accident about 6 months ago and felt helpless. A man hit a pole in his pick up truck, when I got to the truck the man was laying on the back seat because he wasn't wearing his seat belt. There was another lady that opened the other side door where the man was laying. She checked for a pulse and said he was dead like no big deal. To this day it still bothers me when I think about it, would she have acted that way if it was one of her family members. He had no physical trama and wasn't blue, wasn't there something that could have been tried?
  4. I need some advice about the Galen school of Nursing in San Antonio. Has anybody who attended the school think they were taught all they need to know or should I look into another school?
  5. I don't know anybody personally but my Dad knows a nurse that was stabbed with a needle and now has the AIDS virus.
  6. I need a nurses opinion about which kind of school employers prefer or does it matter? College, vocational or getting your license through a hospital taught program ? The hospital that I am thinking about going to requires you work for them 2 years after graduation, after that I may want to go some place else to work and don't want to have a problem getting hired elsewhere. I understand that you take a test to get certified but does the employer take into consideration where you got you education.
  7. When I got my CNA, which was about 12 years ago we had to work at a nursing home for a week and that was enough for me. Don't get me wrong but you do all the dirty work. My aunt, who is a RN said she wouldn't wish it one anybody . It takes a very special person to be a CNA because you do most the work and don't get paid as much. Maybe you could volunteer at a hospital that way you can schedule around your studying.
  8. Why don't you look into the hospitals in your area. One of the hospital systems in my city teach the LVN program and once you graduate you are required to work for the hospital system for 2 years. It is alot easier to get into the hospital program than waiting for the colleges.
  9. I would start saving every penny you can. If you know you can't afford it you need to be realistic and maybe wait until both of your kids are in school. You could also get rid of all the extra expenses you can live without. You might be eating rice and beans but in the end it will be worth it. A lot of the community colleges have courses at night and on the weekends. Plus you won't have to pay for babysitting because your husband will be home?
  10. I've been reading all the problems that it seems a lot of you have been having just to get in the programs. I don't want to wait forever just to get in . You would think they would have more opening with such a shortage of nurses.
  11. What kind of grades did you get? I wouldn't give up if being a nurse is what you want to do with your life. I would talk to the counseler at the school and see what they suggest you do, maybe your grades need to be higher to be competitive with the other students. GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks for the help. Where did you get the materials to study for the NET test ? I will start taking my prerequisites at St. Philips this fall. Was there a waiting list to get into the program?

Has anybody gone through the Baptist Nursing School? Is it expensive? I have called them but at this time they don't have the price of the program. Also, is the HOBET test hard. I am very nervous about taking the test and failing it.
