  1. I have almost 20 years experience in tele, er and med/surg and where I live, not one hospital will train me at all!! How sad! Someone willing to leave a department to train...an RN is a terrible thing to waste....
  2. Greetings.... tell me what you think of this....the other day we had a few patients presenting to triage. I went to call the patient (who was 9), and no answer. the registration clerks said "He's outside running around". (the complaint was suicidal gesture). From where I was standing I saw no one outside, so I called the next patient. The ER doc working that day asked me "Where is this kid?" I told him that the clerks said he was outside but I saw no one. Well this ER doc tells me that it is our responsiblity to go find this kid. He says, "Once they're on our property, they are our responsibility". So, to all you seasoned ED nurses, who know that some days in triage can be a nightmare, you have to go round up your patients if they are not in your waiting room when they are called? That seems ridiculous!! what if they are on the other side of the hospital grounds which can be pretty far away? Thanks
  3. The Va That I Work At Does Not Require That You Join The Union... It Costs About 8$ A Month To Be A Member. However, You Can Use The Union Anytime You Wish... One Nurse Who Has Been There For Years Says That The Union Is Basically For "problem Employees", And If You Are Doing Your Job Right, You Shouldn't Need Them.
  4. Hi..... I too had an interview with the VA. make sure that you send a thank you for the interview note. It does take a while for them to get back to you to let you know if the job is yours. ( at least a month) I was told reference letters go out and they are quite detailed from what i heard. nothing is done until all reference letters come back to the VA. I had my interview in mid- september and was offered the job by the end of november. Hang in there and best wishes!
  5. what a sad day... one of the nurses i work with died today of a brain aneurysm. she was only 41 and leaves 2 children behind.. please pray for her family as they cope with their loss... i cried a lot today... we just went shopping last week... she was a great nurse...
  6. yes, my friend.... write it all down... it means nothing unless you do... its a shame that your boss would even put up with such nonsense!!! unfortunately, some people have no b---s!!
  7. don't put up with that nonsense!! you are not a cna... you are a registered nurse! believe me ..one day she is going to do that to the wrong person, but its too bad you wont be there to watch!!
  8. i pray a lot!!!
  9. make sure you get both sides of the story!
  10. hang in there...believe me, if enough people complain about her, she wont be there long... but make sure everything is documented or else it means nothing! and make sure other co workers are willing to document as well.
  11. Sooooo true nurses!!! Here are some of mine... 1. Dont try to hand me 20 bottles of meds that you take when i am in triage... For i will make you read the name and dose... These are your meds and you should know what you are taking!!!! 2. Dont ask me to feed the army that you came with... Its bad enough that i have to feed and cater to non emergent bs..... 3. Dont get pissed at me that i cant "pull" up your past medical history, 27 allerigies and 50 medications that you take... Especially if you frequent our er 3-4 times a month!! 4. Dont get pissed at me if the doctor doesnt give you your favorite narcotic.... 5. Dont expect a wheelchair or warm blanket in the waiting room if you are waiting to be seen... You dont get that at your doctors office and we should not be doing it here!!! 6. Unfortunately, our hospital gives out taxi vouchers if you dont have a way home... But if left up to me... Get your own way home!! And quite a few know that we offer this service... Etc etc etc....
  12. you cant go wrong with med/surg.. you learn a great deal there and having that under your belt may help you get into other fields down later in your career...
  13. one of many KEEP SWIMMING!! FOOL ME ONCE, SHAME ON YOU.. FOOL ME TWICE, SHAME ON ME! EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE "FOR EVERY S--T THERE'S 2 NICE PEOPLE IN THE WORLD" "IF WE GET TO DRINKING ON SUNDAY, AND ASK YOU TO STAY TILL MONDAY, WE REALLY DON'T MEAN IT! MOST PEOPLE ARE DISCOURAGERS RATHER THAN ENCOURAGERS DON'T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS! DON'T ASSUME!
  14. hi... because of one doctors complaint, i had to completed 6 weeks of "additional training" on day shift to brush up on my charting and critical thinking skills.(mind you, i have been working in this dept. for almost 3 years!!) the nurse that was assigned to me had no doubt in her mind that i would do nothing but well.(which i did) from what i was told, the rest of the docs in the dept. had no problems with me, nor did any of the nurses that i work with. after reviewing some of my co-workers charts, i find that their charting was pretty bad.. almost horrid!! which my preceptor totally agreed... do you think i should bring it up to my nurse manager when we have our eval? my coworkers have commended me for agreeing to go through with this, but i felt that i had no choice... i felt that going back on "orientation" would be detrimental to my career as a nurse... now that i have completed this "task" i dont feel i can stay in the dept. working with this doctor.. i also felt that managment went about it totally wrong. i felt that i had to complete this assignment to be able to get a good reference if i decided to leave or transfer... what do you think? thanks for listening!
  15. hi.. i observed in the or a few days ago hoping to transfer up there... is being asked to observe by the nurse manager a good sign?
  16. hi.. just wondering if anyone knows what is discussed between managers to transfer in house? my boss told me a few months ago that the employee has no say in the transfer process.. does anyone know why that is?
  17. hi.. you must absolutely put all your complaints in writing.. trust me, there is nothing more infuriating than working with people who are not team players and seem to get away with it! all the venting in the world to other co workers, including your boss means nothing unless its put in writing. also have other nurses put their concerns and complaints in writing. i have learned over the years that if you have enough complaints written down a good boss must respond... and if she (or he) does not then follow your chain of command... believe me, things will start happening then!! good luck!

  21. once upon a time 20 some years ago when i was a young lady, patients used to tell me when i got to be "their age" i would accidentally fart... i would bellow that I WOULD NEVER DO THAT!!! well lo an behold when i got to BE their age i was bending over to empty a foley and accidentally farted.... and it was LOUD!

hi.. i was wondering if anyone has ever had synvisc injections for oa... after 3 knee effusions with drainage, in less than 2 months, my next option is synvisc.. are they worse than having your knee tapped? oh the joy of the aging process:o
  23. i agree that you did the right thing, absolutely!! we had a nurse that worked in our er on night shift who was caught in the act... one thing i always try to keep in mind.... what if this nurse was taking care of one of my family members... we must and always should be advocates.. good job..

hi.. we use paper charting in the er where i work.. we are all supposed to document every 2 hours on our patients and for the most part i do... maybe i am writing down the wrong things?
