  1. The pumps we use at our hospital have different programs based on the units the pumps are used such as general med surg or critical care. They have a guardrails program that prevents specific medications from being hung and run incorrectly.
  2. Was the black tarry stool heme positive? Because I would check her other medications. If your patient is recieving IRON then black tarry stools can be seen.
  3. In my institution as long as you are not touching the patient (aka checking IV pump delivering food, etc...) you do not have to be gowned going into a MDRO precaution room. It all depends on your hospital's infection control protocols what you have to do. But when we bring patients with MDRO precautions to tests or other rooms they are wearing a gown themselves as per our hospital protocol. You should take any concerns up with your hospital/institutions infection control committee.
  4. In response to following all of those steps each time. The machines that we use for accuchecks only needs to be calibrated once every 23 hours, however I tend to do it at the start of my shift. Wiping away the first drop of blood depends on the protocol of where you work because they taught us not to do that, because that would be the cleanest sample right after cleansing with alcohol. So it really depends. Those steps look like a long time but they are really the common sense directions and it only takes a few minutes to do them anyways.
  5. Currently I am a rising senior nursing student. This summer I am working as a nurse extern on the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. The basic requirements for being a nurse on this floor is to have gone to an accredited nursing program and passing your boards. Nursing programs in general generate a graduating class of generalalists. Meaning you get a bit of everything so you could work in any setting. It is up to you to decide what you think best works for you and to become an expert in your desired field. Hope this helps you.
  6. My all time favorite is baby lotion.
