Vanderbilt's Nurse Residency Program
There are hundreds and hundreds of applicants for every residency program. It's just a crap shoot. There really ARE other places to work and to learn as much or even more than Vanderbilt.

South FL new grads
Can't understand why there's difficulty finding a job. Some of the travel agencies have plenty of jobs down there.

How long did it take for you to hear back from Vanderbilt Nurse Residency Program ?
Girls! You all need to chill. I've been a nurse for 4 years and wanted to work at Vanderbilt since I graduated. Well, I got my opportunity in Jan and quit 3 wks ago. I should have listened to all the people that told me to stay far away from that place. You will never work with such snotty, cliquey, backstabbing people. It pervades both hospitals. Nurses get this attitude that they're something special and above everyone because they work at "Vandy". I stayed longer than I should have. Yes, I did learn alot and made a few friends, but having headaches and nausea on the way to work is sooooo not worth it.

Vanderbilt is not the end-all, be-all.

Vanderbilt Interenships
Vanderbilt offers no sign-on bonuses, no help for student loans. Their pay isn't great cause "It's Vanderbilt" and you should be honored that they let you work there.

Can someone please help me!
My thoughts exactly. Sounds pretty bogus to me. I wouldn't waste my time answering.

Application Period for Vanderbilt for Dec Grad
I work at Vanderbilt and haven't heard they have a hiring freeze. In my dept alone, we've had more than 15 new employees start in the last 4 months, including me. I applied on their website and was called in less than 2 wks for an interview. There's a hospital orientation every 2 wks. Don't know where you got your info.

Range insulin dosage versus sliding scale
OK, I had a brain fart! Disregard my post about my supposed insulin error.

Range insulin dosage versus sliding scale
OMG!!! I gave a patient too much insulin!!!! I didn't realize what I had done until 2 days after. His BS was 207 (on tube feeding). Calculation was BS-100/10. I gave 10 units of Regular. I know I did something horrible.

South Miami Hospital
South Miami hospital is not in the inner city. It's in a pretty nice area. It is also a Magnet hospital.

norton healthcare, louisville
I am currently at Baptist East and love it. I will probably extend my contract for an additional 13 weeks. The hospital is expanding and they're going for Magnet Status. I just wish it was closer to home and I'd work there as a regular employee.

Am I being "nickle and dimed?"
I am on my first assignment. I took the per diem money and let the agency find me housing. I am guaranteed 36 hrs/wk. My question is this: The first week of orientation was only 31 hrs. (they let us out early 2 of the days). When I got my check yesterday, they deducted the 5 hrs and pro-rated the per diem! I am really po'd. Is this usual practice???

Nurses with ADD/ADHD?
Thanks, Waldowhere! I can so relate to your experiences. I will be starting a prn ER position in 2 wks. I don't want to commit to a position until I see how I handle it. I, too, have great pt relationships and still want hands-on contact. I hope the ER will be my place. I did Hospice for a year and loved it. The only problem was having to work 45+ hrs a week and being on call too often. Are you on medication? I'm on Adderall XR. Unfortunately, I don't think it really makes much of a difference. I'm still scattered and extremely stressed! I hear Adderall that is taken BID works better. Anyone have any thoughts?

Nurses with ADD/ADHD?
I am 54 and have been a RN for 3 yrs. I have mostly done med/surg but I'm finding that with my ADD it's just not working! Way too many distractions, too many pts 6-8, etc. My time management stinks! There has to be another area of nursing that would be better for me - like maybe ER, which is where I would love to work! It's fast paced, which I love, 1-2 pts at a time and you're not responsible for them for 12 hrs. Anyone have any thoughts on this??

Miss pronounciations of medications and medical terms!Way to Funny!!!!!!!!
What about nurses who can't pronounce medications?? Loritab?? Loratab?? Phenergrin?? Or how 'bout Prostrate?? Old timers?? I cringe everytime I hear a coworker mangle medical words!

Sounds weird
Thank-you, KurlyKay! Glad I wasn't imagining it! I also notice that as soon as I enter the building my nose starts running like a faucet. There is such a thing as "Sick building syndrome".

Sounds weird
I have noticed in the last few weeks, at work, that every time I use the foam hand sanitizer or use alcohol I start coughing. It feels like it's going right to my lungs. I know it sounds weird. Anyone else experience this?

How nasty!!
See if you can find Crazy Soap. It cleans oil, grease, dirt, anything from hands and nails. Mostly auto repair places sell it.
-
How nasty!!
You're right about the docs. I should have added them.
-
How nasty!!
Yesterday, sitting in the breakroom with 3 other nurses, I was amazed to see 2 of them with dirty nails and hands. I rarely see any nurse washing their hands, in a patients room or in any sink on the floor. Anyone else notice this?

at what age did you start studying nursing?
I graduated 2 yrs ago and I'll be 54 in 3 wks.

Run them at the same time?
I had to pull his PICC due to infection at the site. It was nearly impossible to get a peripheral in him but I did. It just doesn't make sense to schedule all of the abx at the same time. If he is still there today, I will ask the doc to reschedule them.

Run them at the same time?
Thanks Suesquatch. It did sound like a scary thing to do.
