Yeah, it is very difficult to accept giving up your life for "theirs" only to be rewarded by being forced to leave or the threat thereof. Each day many of us come in never knowing if today will be our last. I have worked for an organization for over 19 years. In the last three years I have witnessed more than 60 "let go" whether it was restructure, downsize, or just want to get rid of you... For several it was due to supervisory or management not liking what you say or do and either you resign as of today with a decent referral or get "laid off" or "fired" with a poor referral. Usually we find out by an email that states the employee has decided to leave for another opportunity as of TODAY-that's how we know which way it really went down .

I have met several nurses that have married and supported their spouses during med school, residency, and/or established in their profession only to get burnt by divorce/separation for a another (usually new younger) partner. I only know of one nurse that was a office manager that married her boss/doctor and at least it lasted until his death at 70-something. It does not just happen in the medical field though-I see young couples stay together until they get what or where they want and then move on. Especially true is when one is supporting the other and then the "other" leaves after achieving their goals via the provided financial/provision of living quarters, etc.

Hi Decartes-I did take the all day NCLEX review and used the CDs that came with it. That was it. As for the boards I envisioned myself sitting at the at the dining room table pretending it was only a "homework" assignment.

Hi, the testing does not mean a thing-all the practice pre-tests I took I failed and I was discouraged and very worried. When I took the boards I aced it in less than 45 mins. The tests are not a reliable source of whether one will pass or fail. Good luck and don't worry!

Gator RN, I was inpatient for a abscess (thanks to staff & Docs poor sterile technique and short cuts) that developed after abdominal surgery. I began to have chest pain, SOB, nausea during an MRI. I begged the tech to stop and his response was he was almost done... The time was 2230. The tech gave me O2-took my pressure and I was taken back to my room. I hit the call light and told the nurse I was having chest pain. She acted all disgusted-burnout-you know the end of a 12hr shift. I waited...at 2330 I hit the light again-night shift nurse came in and I asked if the other nurse reported my chest pain-No, she did not. Night nurse said she would call the Doc. Now it's 0100-intern came in and tried telling me it was GERD!!! Still no EKG yet. The night nurse called in a different Doc (thank the Lord). He said where's the stat EKG that was ordered? The EKG revealed A-Fib. He gave me cardiazem which converted me quickly and I went to CCU. My hospital file stated tachycardia from fever and nothing else...

I have awakened twice, once during foot surgery and once during a D&C. During foot surgery it hurt and I said hey, I feel that and they put me back under. During the D&C it did not hurt and I jumped up stating that I had to get to work (brainwashed-aren't we?). As for documentation-it wasn't, as a matter of fact, this one time (in band camp ) I had A-fib and rec'd cardizem to convert which was not in my discharge summary...

I was there six months as an internship for critical care training and after seeing numerous short cuts, charting ahead of time, signing off meds before given, things like central line dsg chgs consisting of going in taking off the tegaderm and putting on a new one without cleaning or changing caps because they were in a hurry. etc. I did not accept the job after the internship was completed.

Nurse Mike-have not read the entire forum-just happen to catch your last paragraph about staying calm. I worked for a short time in a cardiac step down unit and when things went bad I stayed calm and collected and took the necessary trained steps-everyone else was spazing out-my preceptor actually asked me if I was "ignorant of the seriousness of the situation" because I do not over react when there is code or pending code...:trout:
