No responses to applications.
Hey, I am in the same boat as you. I have been applying for what seems like forever to every job that looks even remotely like something I would want to do. I graduated in May, licensed in early August. I've been applying to jobs in 5 states, just hoping I would get something. I haven't yet, but today I got an e-mail from a hospital that would pretty much be my dream job, so I'm hoping I'm on the track to at least get an interview. It's just a "screening questions" email that I have to answer and send back, but at least it's something! I am tired of spending hours on applications just to get an automated response, it's so frustrating. So, to all of us new grads...good luck! Keep your chin up, because one of those applications will be the one to get a job. I'm trying to stay positive, this e-mail was what I needed to re-energize myself and feel like my applications weren't just disappearing into cyberspace somewhere. :redbeathe

Tips for New Interns: How To Get Along With The Nurse
I am a student nurse and it drives me absolutely crazy when a doctor comes into my patient's room while I am in there and they totally ignore me. I'm not saying I need a speech, but just an acknowledgement that I am in the room is fine. Bonus points if you want to teach me something useful and you're nice about it. Also, don't be rude to my patient - I am very protective of them and if you are rude I WILL report it to my nursing instructor or primary nurse...there's no reason to be rude to a patient.

NEED HELP DRUG CAL.
I'm glad I could help...I know that it can be really intimidating. Good luck with everything and don't hesitate to contact me if you need anything. As nursing students we're all in this together:)

NEED HELP DRUG CAL.
Hey, I was nervous about drug calculations as well, but what really helped me was to listen and take good notes when it is explained, but when you get home, take a look at the information from the problem and write out any of the pertinent information. For example if the dose is 250mg, what you have on hand is 500mg, I take that information out of the word problem and write it down so it's easy to see what information you have. From there, I just think about basic algebra and what would make sense to me to solve it. There are so many ways to solve these types of problems, you just have to find what works for you. Do a lot of practice problems until you get a lot of them right on the first try. JUst keep working at it and don't get discouraged, you will be fine.

Frustrated
So the clinical day is over and I have to admit it wasn't so bad. I prepared as much as I possibly could and tried not to give her a reason to call me out on anything and all in all it went well. I was on pins and needles all day but now that its over I feel I did my best and thats all I can do. Thank you for the advice, I guess I won't really know how this woman feels until my evaluation in a week but I think I'm going to be okay.

Frustrated
I am in my junior year of nursing and this one clinical instructor I have seems like she is targeting me. I had some difficulties in the beginning of clinical this semester, mostly time management related and I feel, no, I know, I have gotten much better. However, this instructor doesn't seem to think so. I have tried so hard to make her happy and do well and it just doesn't matter to her. None of my other instructors seem to have a problem with me and have even told me that I'm doing well. The skills are the same in both clinicals, so that's why I'm having such a hard time understanding what I need to do to make this woman happy. Tomorrow is my last day with this clinical instructor and she basically told me tomorrow is when she will decide if I can pass clinical or not. I'm pretty much giving myself an ulcer thinking about it and I'm sure the anxiety won't help me much in trying to be perfect tomorrow but I can't exactly relax thinking about how this one woman can ruin everything for me. I guess I just wanted to vent but if anyone has any suggestions I would definitely appreciate it.

Christmas List for Nursing Students
I have the Saunders NCLEX-RN 4th edition book, it has been helpful in studying for exams. If one is recommended by a professor, buy that one...mine take exam questions from the book that was recommended, so it is extra helpful. If one is not recommended, the Saunders book is a good one since it comes with a cd-rom. Good Luck with everything!

You know you are in nursing school when ctxt

Great question...as a fellow student I have these same questions and there are some great tips here.

Microbiology Venting
Think about where phospholipids are in cells and what not having them there would result in.

Summer Job in S. Jersey
Hey, I am a nursing student in my first semester of clinicals. I am looking to get a job this summer in a hospital or doctor's office to get some experience. I looked into Nurse Extern programs, and I don't have enough clinical experience for most of the ones that are close to me. I was wondering if anyone knew of any hospitals/doctor's offices or something similar that hires nursing students for the summer. Thanks!

Drexel ACE - textbooks
Hey, I don't go to Drexel but I know how you feel about books. I try to buy mine online, from Amazon.com or Half.com. I've saved hundreds of dollars throughout college by doing this. Many of the people on there are just like us, trying to sell their books to make some extra cash. I would recommend trying those two places. Good luck!

Need to interview 2 nursing students ASAP
Sure! I would love to help!! 1) I knew it was going to be a lot of work, but I didn't realize how much it would really be. I was also surprised that there was a lot of theory and other things to learn before getting into the clinical work 2)Time management! It's hard to stay on track. Procrastination is a big problem, mostly because I see the mound of work that needs to be done and just can't bring myself to start it. 3) I love the fact that my profession will be helping people return to health and stay healthy. I'm sure it would be much easier to be another major, but I just don't think the reward would be as great. There is also a strong bond that is formed within the nurses that I just don't see in other majors 4) Get your study habits down, and find out what works for you. Studying and remembering what you've read are 2 really important parts of being successful, so get those skills down and you will be golden. Also, learn how to manage your time. 5) Don't be afraid to ask questions and get to know your fellow nursing majors because you will be spending the majority of your time with them and they will be a really good resource. Also, if you have a student nurses association or something similar, join it and get involved, you will enjoy your time in nursing school so much more and get so much more out of it. Hope this helps, good luck!:)

Bye Bye Discovery Health
Not from what the press release says....it looks like a few of the shows will be shown on other channels, but for the most part it is going to be all Oprah's new programming

Bye Bye Discovery Health
Is anyone as upset as I am about Oprah taking over Discovery Health to make her own network? It's not happening until late 2009, but I don't know what I am going to do when it is gone. http://corporate.discovery.com/news/press/08q1/announcement_0115.html

Management?
Hi, I haven't posted in awhile but I have a question. I transferred from one college to another and now I have some time in my schedule. I am taking a management class right now, I am thinking about minoring in management. I just don't know if it is worth it...will employers care about a minor in management? I just don't want to be paying for classes that aren't going to get me anywhere (filler classes) so I thought about the minor as my best option for not wasting money. I really like the management class that I am in, so I'm thinking I should stick with it but there's still a question there. Is there anyone that has a minor or degree in management who is also a nurse that could give me some input? Thanks so much! Amy

New Contraceptive Pill approved to stop periods
I agree with you in some aspects; you stated that you do not believe that it is necessary to take medicine unless you are sick. I believe that you should not take medication unless there is something that prevents a person from having a normal everyday life. Not sleeping could easily cause disruption in someone's life. If someone does not get a decent amount of sleep, it could cause a myriad of issues, including (but not limited to) car accidents, poor performance at work (which for us nurses/nursing students could have a huge impact on other's lives), family problems (who wants do deal with a grouch that hasn't slept?) and the general effects on the body from not sleeping. Personally, I would rather take a pill rather than ahve my life turned upside down because I can't sleep. Also, you mentioned taking a pill for nervousness in public. To some people with very public jobs, that could threaten their career, it's not just that they are lazy and just want to take a pill for everything. You also stated that mestruation is not a disorder. You're right - but when menstruation causes severe cramps that cannot be controlled by taking a pain reliever, it canhave a profound effect on a person's life. I used to miss school because my cramps made m ephysically sick, but since I've been on the pill I haven't missed one minute of class due to cramps. I'm sorry this is long, I don;t want it to seem like I am attacking you, I just wanted to share my view. I ama firm believer in it is ok to agree to disagree.:wink2:

Need help with a minor...
Thanks for all of your help...my advisor suggesting management, and that's what I've decided to do. I'm not officially declaring it as my minor yet, I am going to take a class in it next semester and if I like it I will officially declare. Thanks so much!:nuke:

Need help with a minor...
Hi, I am in a situation where I could pick up a minor, but I am not sure which one to choose. I was thinking something in Management, but when I looked at the courses they didn't look like they would be much of an advantage in a nursing career, so I am looking for suggestions. I don't think I would want to do anything in Psychology, I feel like I've had so much of it already I think if I had to take another psych class I would probably go crazy. Keeping in mind that I go to a very small school (

Take at least 6 units and never repay loans?
There is a way to not repay your federal loans- its called loan forgiveness. The government will forgive loans for nurses, teachers who will be working in a area with a shortage of teachers (like dangerous urban schools, rural schools, etc.) and other "in need" professions. There's a long list of requirements that you have to meet, and even if you meet them its still not guaranteed to have your loans forgiven. It's best to plan to pay back your loans, and then if they are forgiven its a nice surprise. Here are some links: http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/loanrepay.htm http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/repaying_loans/2003_2004/english/loan-discharge-cancellation.htm

thanks!
A few months ago I asked for ideas for a topic to write a paper on for my pharmacology class; I decided to ask in this forum because I am interested in NICU nursing and I wanted my topic to be different from the usual papers that are written. I received some great replies and ended up writing about pulmonary surfactant. It was an interesting paper to write and my professor was impressed because no one else had picked that topic. I received the full amount of credit...5 points added to my final grade! yay! So...I just wanted to thank ALL of you who gave me ideas, once again you were extremely helpful to this stressed out nursing student. I wish I could give you all a hug, but just imagine it, haha. Thank you so much!
