  1. No you are correct. But with the new Affordable Care Act, if you work more than 30 hours per week, your employer HAS to offer you insurance. So the PRN's that are working more than 30 are getting their hours cut. I was just wondering how other medical facilities were handling this.
  2. I am a PRN nurse in a hospital and of course we are cutting hours below 30/week. Just wondering if PRN staff signed something that says we refuse benefits if we would be allowed to work more than 30? I can't find any law that addresses that?
  3. Yeah, I think the whole electrical system thing just hasn't "stuck" yet. Like I said, I am really trying to like it and learn it because I think with a tele or ICU background, that is really the foundation for everything. I know how important it is, I just need to stick it!!
  4. Just wondering if everyone started out loving telemetry and knew that's what you wanted to do, or did it take some getting used to? I am a recent grad in May, and because the hospital I worked at paid for my tuition, I am working for them for 1 year to pay it back. Unfortunately, cardiac was NOT my favorite thing in school and that is where they put me to work at. I am really, really trying to learn, and trying to like it, but it just isn't coming to me. I have always had this mental block when it comes to the heart and I stink at reading the monitor strips! So does anyone have any motivational words or has anyone been in this same situation and just eventually learned to love tele?! Would love to hear from someone that was once in the same boat as me!!
  5. Just wanted to give my input on the "trick". I would have bet thousands that I failed that crazy test, but checked the Pearson site as soon as I got home, and it wouldn't let me reregister. And I PASSED!!! It definitely saved me from a few gray hairs!!!
  6. Question for everyone that tried the "trick". Did anyone try it and it wasn't correct? I am testing today for NCLEX RN and will be dying to find out results, and didn't know how soon I can try the trick.
  7. Thanks Bellarubia for the advice. Congrats on passing!!!
  8. Thanks, and good luck to you.
  9. I just graduated May 8th, and am taking Kaplan which is the last weekend in May and first weekend in June. Not thinking clearly, I scheduled my NCLEX on the Monday right after Kaplan. Since I have been studying already, do you guys who have taken Kaplan and boards think this is a really stupid idea, or think I should be OK? I have been doing all the Qbank and trainer quizzes. I just really don't want to put it off any longer, but yet I definitely want to be prepared. Thanks for any advice you may have for me!
  10. I have actually been studying, but I have about 6 books that I keep going back and forth between, and sometimes it's really overwhelming. I just wanted opinions on which one others preferred so I could focus on maybe 1 or 2.
  11. I am taking NCLEX June 8th, doing Kaplan over the next two weekends. I was just wondering to all who have taken NCLEX already, which study book was more like the real thing? I have several and don't know which one to really focus on. I was seriously sick to my stomach even scheduling the exam!
  12. I just wanted some flashcards so that I could throw some in my purse and study at randoms times, and not have to carry a book around. I wish I had thought of flashcards back in August, because you are right, making my own would have been great, but never even thought of it. So I just thought I would ask which ones were preferred by some on this site.
  13. Ummm...not sure what perfect world you are living in, but I have 19 class days of school left, 12 tests, and all of the studying that will be involved in that, not sure when anyone would have time to go back thru EVERYTHING and make flash cards. So does anyone else have any recommendations as to which flash cards are best?
  14. Does anyone know if the Saunders Q&A NCLEX book has the same questions as the flash cards? I have Saunders, Lippincott and Mosby book but wanted to get some flashcards because I can carry them around with me alot easier, but didn't know which flash cards were best, and also if the book questions were duplicating the flash cards??? If anyone knows of some different flash cards that you really liked please let me know!
  15. That makes sense when you put it like that! I guess I just have trouble putting into "proper" words what I need to say. I will go work on it again...thanks so much!
  16. I have to do a care map, which is similar to a care plan. My pt had GI bleed, and for the nusing diagnosis I used fluid volume deficit, altered nutrition, altered tissue perfusion. I now have to write out 2 long term goals and 2 short term goals for the pt. For one of the short term I wrote "pt will demonstrate improved fluid balance within 24 hours of hospital admission" then I have listed interventions. I am at a complete loss as to what some long term goals could be. Pt did have alcoholic cirrhosis, so could one of them be regarding his alcoholism? I am just not sure which way to go with this! Thanks - these careplans seriously drive me crazy!
  17. I am in the same situation in my med/surg class right now. Four out of 32 passed our first test, and passing rate is an 80% for our nursing program. I did a little better on the second test, and finally passed the third test. Our teacher is very open to discussing our issue, and has repeatedly told us to study the NCLEX books. The questions on her test are straight out of those books. Studying those books really makes you think and determine which one is truly the "best" answer.
  18. I am currently in a bridge program up in Maryville. It was pretty easy to get into, and some people in my class aren't even done with all of their prereq's. The school is allowing them to finish them during intercession or something. Maryville would be a very long drive for you though!
  19. Lauren, it is definitely possible. I did HORRIBLE right out of high school, getting D's and C's, so my GPA was about 2.5! About 10 years later, finally decided to grow up and started working on pre-req's getting A's and ended up getting my LPN. Although I will say that I was not able to compete in some schools around here because of my terrible grades, and I even tried to explain my situation, but it didn't matter. But there is a way to get what you want! Don't give up! I am now in an RN bridge program and going to graduate May '09. What area in MO do you live and what schools are you looking at?
  20. The only problem I am having right now, is that alot of our class have been an LPN for MANY years and some haven't even passed LPN boards yet. So when lecturing in OB or Med Surg for example, the instructor says "we aren't going to lecture this part because it should be review". Well, it would have been review for me about 5 years ago when I got out of LPN school! So alot is self teaching. And it seems that LPN school was more black/white. Like, I remember having to memorize definitions, etc. In RN school, it is taking all of that and applying it to a situation.
  21. Just wondering what your passing rate is for your RN schools? This year our school increased theirs from 77% to 80%. The first med surg test I got a 78% and I am completely freaking out! In our final grade, even though we do all kinds of extra assignments, they only base our grade on tests. Is anyone else's school similar?
  22. OMG! You are amazing Daytonite! I have always had this horrible mental block when it comes to problems like this, even word problems in high school algebra! I recently purchased the Dosages Made Incredibly Easy book, but not too crazy about it. Are there any books that you recommend? I need a book that specifically shows examples like you just did. I think my problem is that I don't have a clue how to set up the problem, so when you did that one, now I can do the rest of the page that I am working on!!! Thanks!
  23. :banghead:Thanks in advance for help! I haven't had to do this for a while now, and have returned to RN bridge program, and cannot figure this out! Order: ampicillin 250mg IV every 4 hours for infection Supply: ampicillin 1g vial Nursing drug reference: Reconstitute with 10ml of 0.9% NS and further dilute in 50ml NS. Infuse over 15minutes. How many ml will you draw fromthe vial after reconstitution? Calculate the ml/hr to set the IV pump. Calculate the drops per minute with a drop factor of 10gtt/ml. COMPLETELY CLUELESS ON THIS!
  24. I have been an LPN for two years now, and work in a clinic. I just switched from adult family practice to the ped side, which I do like! I started out making 11.62/hour for about 9 months. Then received a 3% market increase, then about a year later, received another market adjustment, so now I am making 14.40/hour. I do live about two minutes from the clinic though, so the lesser pay I figured was worth the gas I would have been spending. Because I am going back to school to get my RN in a couple of weeks, I am going part time at the clinic, and because I chose to forego all of my benefits and vacation/holiday time, it bumped me to around 16.50/hour.
  25. It has been two years since I graduated LPN school, and I start a 2 semester bridge program this August. I have been trying to brush up on some things, but I feel like I have forgotten soooo much! Did anyone else feel like this, or should I really start studying this summer to get prepared?! I am hoping it all comes rushing back once I get started...
