New mother baby nurse to be ...would love some advice about what the hardships are.
hardships i deal with... 1. understaffing--having to care for an average of 5 moms with pp complications and about three babies who might have complications too 2. sorry uap's--having to check and recheck to see if something was done 3. trying to give adequate teaching to every mom in a short time( 2 days for rpp and 3 day for c/s) 4. language barriers--my patient population is about 98 percent hispanic 5. constantly getting scolded for not being breastfeeding advocates..when u have 5 patients there is no way possible to spend 30 to 45 minutes with each mom with breastfeeding issues..not to mention the lactation nurses leave at 5!! all in all i love, love, love, mother/baby nursing..it has it's ups and downs but i personally think it is the best area of nursing...

doctors treatment of nurses??
i've worked at a small private hospital and now at a large county hospital...i can honestly say the large county hospital is a better experience because we have first year interns and residents so you are basically training and teaching them..hence no time for the "i'm the MD..you're the dumb nurse attitude"!! it makes it easier for everybody when docs are polite or at least like someone said PROFESSIONAL. considering we spend more time with their patients, you would think they would be cordial and remain professional!! in a perfect world i guess...LOL

AWHONN Staffing Guidelines Please check this out:
i work on a pp complications floor..so we get anything from pt's still on mag to pts with psych issues. we also take babies in our assignment. the awhhon guideline seem like heaven to me as my average assignment is about 5 moms and three babies. EVERY mom has a complication so it's not a breeze. my assignment could consist of a mag pt, a chorio mom and baby (both on antibiotics), HIV, and whatever else happens to come since we are steadily admitting new pts. we also take pp readmit wound infections, mastitis, or other post D/C complications....we rotate charge nurse but charge nurse gets an assignment!! staffing is always an issue unless we are slow which then we are forced to be canceled which is a whole other can of worms!! LOL

TEXAS RN's: Is HESI harder than NCLEX?
taking the HESI since Level I ...i feel confident in saying that YES it is definitely harder than the NCLEX..however I do feel like it helped in preparing for the NCLEX..although I passed HESI in all levels and i passed the NCLEX on the first time I can say that without taking the HESI i might have gone into boards expecting lighter content!! Hope you pass..read that study guide book to pass HESI and do as many practice questions as you can to help with the NCLEX!! Good Luck:nurse:
