Where are all the Direct Entry students???
Hey there, I am a Direct-Entry student at Yale right now--just finishing up my first semester!!!!!!! The observation that we are all to busy to be posting is correct. Its a wild ride--but you'll love it! I think something to keep in mind about Direct-Entry is that it is still grad school. You are doing all science and all nursing all the time. You will be with students who are studying the exact same thing as you all the time. and you will be studying ALL the time. And when I say studying I mean memorizing. You will take so many scan tron tests your head will spin. I came from a political science background and was so used to essay tests. I was thrown for a loop with the different approach to learning in the sciences. So keep that in mind. Also, try to find out as much about nursing as you can. You are going into nursing--you are not becoming a doctor. They are two very different careers. know what makes nursing unique-talk to nurses-get a job at the front desk of a clinic-do anything you can to get close to nurses. Your whole first year (for most DE students) will be focused on becoming a nurse, not a nurse practitioner. That comes later The good news is : I love it! Working so closely with patients is awesome! The whole program is challenging in a good way--I encourage all you guys who are starting the application process and whatnot to not give up! I was there just a year ago................. Good Luck!!!

Goal Statements
One little thing to keep in mind--when I was applying to schools I was about to send in my application to one of them which included just the bare necessities and on a whim I called the school and asked if I could also send in my resume. The recruitment officer said "oh yeah! you can send in whatever you want!" So then I threw in my resume, an article written about me and this program i was in in undergrad, a part of my undergraduate thesis, etc. I loaded it up! Anything for them to see how awesome you are, send it along! When I flew out for an interview, my interviewer had totally read everything I sent and really knew who I was. Just something to keep in mind!

Welcome Future Yale GEPNs!!!
how weird!:uhoh21: Well, you should be getting it in the next few days at least. Now that you mention it, there is a lot of info in the packet but nothing really of great importance. I think they said that it will be coming later. I guess we do have a lot of time before we actually start. I keep feeling like I'm on the Columbia time line--they're starting in May! Even though that sounds exciting, I would be going crazy right now. yeah craigslist is nice, but nothing is available starting august at this point--everything is like may or june availability. OH! we do get an academic calendar in the packet! that's nice to have! we get over 2 weeks for spring break!

Welcome Future Yale GEPNs!!!
Hmmmmmm, you should have gotten your packet by now for sure. You should call them. The packet has tons of stuff in it. And as far as the sample schedule, it really wasn't that bad. Basically we're doing stuff from 8am until 3pm on non clinical days. I was so involved in things in undergrad that I was going from 7am until 10pm every day, so I am totally ok with this schedule. Not to mention the fact that I won't have to take anatomy (we can waive it if we've taken it already) which basically frees up every friday! Whoo-hoo! Been looking daily on the craigslist just to get an idea of housing. Looks like it will be just around what we were told. (at least $650 for a studio) C'est la vie!

Accepted Columbia University's ETP student-meet-n-greet
OK, even though I'm officially a Yalie, I still hang out at this thread. I'm so glad to hear that everyone had a positive experience at visiting day! but someone has to explain this "rapping" to me--I'm intrigued! What the heck did she rap about, and at what point did she do this, and who IS this person!? I've been cracking up about this whole concept!:rotfl:

Welcome Future Yale GEPNs!!!
This is so weird--i totally feel like i should be doing something to prepare, but there isn't really anything to do! I want to move there right now and start classes next week! I am so pumped and it sucks to be sitting at home and doing nothing--i live with my parents

How many schools did everyone apply to?
its hard to say. i applied to 4 but got into all of them, so looking back i wish i would have applied to less and saved some money--at the same time i didn't think i would get into any of them! Oh well, hindsight is 20/20. I would say apply to three, tops. Call the schools and give them your profile (ie. GRE scores, GPA, various accomplishments) and ask their honest opinion--they will tell you if you'd be a competitive applicant. Good Luck!:roll

Wow, that is hilarious to read these things on the financial aid peeps. I called a couple days ago and they told me the same thing--"ummmmm we can't find your FAFSA, ummmm maybe something's screwed up in the computer"--yeah whatever. and Yale said that too! Maybe it is the computers, or maybe all financial aid offices are impossible to work with! nyacoustic--yeah, my financial aid from yale was fan-frickin-tastic so, I am for sure going to be a yalie--however I will be coming to NY as much as possible to party it up with all the columbians on this thread! hey, Krystellmarie and I are already virtual drinking buddies!:biere:

Welcome Future Yale GEPNs!!!
Yay! Finally got my financial aid--albeit through e-mail, but who cares. Pretty much the same, but I was glad to see I got max. amount of scholarship and perkins loan they have to offer (lI have a low EFC). I am deperately searching for scholarships, but there are not many available to people in our situation (GEPN/Direct entry) so I think I might just have to bite the bullet! Wow, I'm not worried, but I'm not gonna lie, the amount I'll take out in loans this coming year is more than double of what I took out during my entire undergraduate education!!! But once again, I'm just pumped to get started!!!! By the way, is any one already buying some of their supplies, e.g. steth., scrubs, etc. I only ask because I live at home right now, and I'm pretty sure if I start buying now my parents will shell out (they're still in the "i'm so proud of my daughter for getting into yale" mode--y'all with me?) but i don't want to buy the wrong things--do we have to purchase things through yale?

Important Info For Grad Students!!
You rock lovingpecola!!!!! Still waiting on my financial aid packet from Yale, I called them, and there has been some glitch, but thankfully, recognizing that it is their problem, they are extending the acceptance date for those of us who got screwed up in the computer system. I am so happy you posted about this loan!!!!!!!!!! :roll

:yeahthat: Ha Ha Ha! I am totally with you Elizabells! Everyone who knows I'm going to an ivy next year has to say some smart ass comment about the money--but seriously, once you're way in debt $30,000 or $100,000--who cares!? Its all impossible!:rotfl:

Rejection from Vanderbilt?
It is so interesting how these schools work--its like there is no structure at all! I found out from Vanderbilt right away--like January 17th or something like that. However, I did not receive any financial aid because I knew I wanted to go to Yale and waited until I heard from them. It was so awkward and difficult to send in my rejection to Vanderbilt. ( I never in my life thought i would refuse an offer from an ivy league, and now i'm refusing TWO) Its like you pour your blood, sweat and tears into these applications and then end up not going!? Its crazy. I loved Vanderbilt, but for all the wrong reasons--it would be warmer, Nashville is fantastic, the campus is compact, the hospital is across the street from the Nursing building, my friend lives there, etc. I really like Yale's program, it just fits me better. Ah, c'est la vie!

Welcome Future Yale GEPNs!!!
I just got an e-mail from Yale's financial aid office that said it would take longer for them to process my 'stuff'. Seriously, I feel like this whole year has been a waiting game for me!
-
Welcome Future Yale GEPNs!!!
yeah, i'm also wondering where the heck mine is--I wonder if i sent everything in!? Just the Yale app. and FAFSA, right? Also, Columbia just sent me a whole bunch of stuff but not a financial aid packet! What the Heck!?

Welcome Future Yale GEPNs!!!
I am now a for sure regarding Yale--unless for some cosmic reason Columbia offers me a free ride, which I'm pretty sure will NOT happen:chuckle Regarding our humble thread here, I think most Yalies are using the forum provided for us. That's been great, but I feel like I have to be kind of guarded with that--given that everyone (as in Administration and whatnot) has access to that. On allnurses I can be a little more candid!
