Survey: What are you taking this Fall?
CLASSES for FALL 2006: A&P 1, Geometry, Comp II, Dev. Psych., Music Appreciation. All of these online with an on campus lab for A & P CLASSES for SPRING 2006 (if you know): A & P II, College Algebra, History of West. Civ II, Spanish II PROGRAM: BSN WHEN STARTED PRE-REQs: spring 06 WHEN YOU PLAN TO APPLY for CLINICALS: fall of 07 for spring 08 PROJECTED GRADUATION: spring 2010 MOST NERVOUS about: I have four children 9 and under and homeschool two of them. balancing all of that with four online classes WANT TO BE A NURSE BECAUSE: This may sound cheesy but I want to help people. I have seen too many people in my life criticize nurses and doctors and not know a whit about what they were speaking. I want to improve on things that have irritated me about nurses that I've experienced in the past and expound upon what I have appreciated in nurses that I've experienced in the past. YOUR INSPIRATION: The nurse at the health department who told me that my children could catch Hepatitis B from sitting on a toilet seat and then informed me that SHE was the RN (it still makes me mad that someone would behave that way), I never want to be that misinformed while making someone else feel that stupid. The nurse that worried with my IV all night long when it refused to stay in and was determined to blow, I want to be able to show that sort of compassion for others. Finally, my children, because I want them to see that I am an intelligent person who they can have pride in and that they too can go to college and obtain a degree if they want to. PREVIOUS JOBS/CAREER: I was a secretary for five years and then quit to be a sahm. I am now a sahm, teacher of two, physical/occupational/speech therapist of one, and wife to one. Wow, that sounded sort of like an award acceptance speech lol.

Personality Test for Specialty
My top three were Emergency, Pathology, and Dermatology. I'm not surprised by the emergency but dermatology? I can't see that in a million years. I'm not shocked that oncology is on the bottom. Obstetrics was 7 and that was good. Very interesting. Thanks for the link. Janie

Am I too old?
I am 29 and have four children ages 9, 7, 3, and 1. My seven year old has autism and my one year old has a kidney defect that requires a lot of drs appointments. After Christmas I started to feel old and that my time was running out. I started to go after this dream of nursing and I have more energy now than I did at 18 and I know in my heart that I will be happier and feel younger at 30 than I did at 20. I think going to school after having children and with a full plate puts us at obvious disadvantages but also gives us advantages such as we don't have to worry about who our current boyfriend is, where we're spending our saturday nights, or what our hair looks like for that cute guy in class lol. If this is what you want then jump on board and go with it.

Financial Aid Question
As the previous person said yes it will as long as you can fulfill the gpa requirement and get it into your courseload. I don't think what you take matters as far as financial aid goes.

on line classes for generals, are they reallly deep?
Thanks for the vote of confidence nc rn 2b. I guess the fear of the unknown is worse than the actual class. I will be glad when it gets here though.

on line classes for generals, are they reallly deep?
I have taken everything online so far. I found the hardest thing to be my History class. It was hard to see what was emphasized and what wasn't so I couldn't decide what to memorize. I am registered to take my last dev. algebra and a spanish course online this summer (in 8 weeks) and then in the fall I am registered to take A & P I, Dev. Psychology, Geometry, Comp II, and Music Appreciation all online. THe only thing I would go to campus for would be for a three hour lab on Monday nights, and the proctored exams. I really enjoy doing the math online because I can move through what I don't need help with and spend more time on the rest. I am really worried about the A & P though. Hopefully, I can schedule like lanabanana and do my studying during my four childrens activities.

calculus prereq?
I think where I am coming up different is that I'm looking at the articulation agreements for Roane State (where I'm doing my prereqs) and it requires Calculus and P & S calculus based in the articulation agreement. So, would I be better to take my Math at UT? That way it would possibly be less? I'm at a loss here. Thanks for all your input though. It has been VERY helpful.

calculus prereq?
It does say that on their website and it really just flabbergasts me. Tennessee Wesleyan (the second one you listed) was my second choice and it isn't nearly as difficult. Thanks for your help though.

calculus prereq?
No, the first year is a series 1630-1830 which is Finite Mathematics (1630) and Basic Calculus (1830) and then for the sophomore year the math req is Probabilities and statistics calcus based. The problem I have is that it's so far out there on the prereqs that I would hate to spend all that time for just the one school when I can take classes that aren't as hard and qualify for several other schools. Does that make sense? I was just wondering if any other schools were requiring the same thing.

calculus prereq?
I'm just starting out and trying to decide which schools to set my "sights" on. The U of TN is near me but it has a calculus prereq. My student advisor said that they added it to weed out all but the best. I tried to search and see if any other schools had this prereq but couldn't find anything. Do any of you know of other schools that have this? Thanks in advance, Janie

Where is everyone from?
I am 29 years old from East Tennessee. I have been married 10 years and have four children ages 9, 7, 3, and 1. My dream was to be a stay at home mother for the rest of my life until I had an early midlife crisis and decided right after Christmas that I was going to finally deal with that other dream in the back of my mind of being a midwife. So, now I'm in school and loving it. I really felt old when I first started this. Glad to know that many of you are my age as well.

History trouble
The questions are all multiple choice. I guess I was having a bit of a pity party for myself. The material is like someone said very broad and has a lot of sociology and anthropology added to it. The teacher allows you to take quizzes three times and then she averages the three grades together for that quiz grade but you only have 15 minutes to answer 30 multiple choice questions so you better know the material. Then for the exams she allows you to take a note card with writing front and back with notes. She also allows you to make up missed quizzes and exams at the end of the term. I did email her last night and asked her about skipping the exam and told her that my six year old (who has autism) had been sick with strep throat and had been stimming for several days (not very conducive for studying). She told me to concentrate on the upcoming material and then I could make the exam up at the end to save my grade. I suppose I should consider that my one reprieve and not expect it to happen much lol. As far as taking Math online. I have always been super terrible at Math and Algebra. You're talking to someone who took Algebra I three times in high school. I did finally finish Algebra II and Geometry but I didn't retain any of it. I do love taking the Algebra online. If I grasp something then I can move on quickly. If I am not absorbing something then I can spend several days working problems over and over again until it clicks in my mind. I'm lucky because my husband is also in school and he has finished calculus and finite math classes with straight A's so he gets it all and can explain it really well one on one probably better than an instructor could. I really hope to get to take as many of my math's online that I can.

History trouble
I am taking three classes this semester and all of them are online classes. I thought for sure that my biggest trouble would be my algebra class and I've mad all 100's on my quizzes and exams in that class. I've also made perfect grades in my comp class. History of Western Civilization is another story. It seems like the instructor doesn't really specify what parts of the material are most important and expects all of the material to be practically memorized. I have a test tomorrow and I know that I'm going to fail it because I have read and studied the material but I can't memorize the dates and names as well as I think she wants. Does anyone else have these problems? I'm just so bummed because I've always been so good at history. I'm worried that I'm already hurting my GPA.

Is it too much to ask?? (vent)
My thoughts exactly.

Is it too much to ask?? (vent)
I am in a similar situation as you except my husband is against me going to school. We have four children and I am homeschooling my oldest right now and going to school full time. He doesn't want our son to go to school but he doesn't want me to go to school at night either. Right now I am taking all of my classes by video or online but next semester I'll have to take "real" classes and I'm not sure how that is going to go. I think he is very intimidated by the thought of my going to school. He is in school himself but I think it hurts his ego to think of my making money too. He keeps saying that i'm going to leave him after I get my degree. Uh yeah four kids and 15 years later that is exactly what I'm going to be thinking. Hopefully he will get better as I hope your husband will too. I didn't mean to postjack. sorry.

Compass Test??
I took the COMPASS test in the first part of January and I tested into a midlevel remedial algebra class. At first I was a little upset about it but the more I thought about it the more I was glad that I didn't test straight into College Algebra. I had to start over and I now have a grasp on algebra that I never had. while before I would have never even considered taking a calculus class but now I'm seriously considereing taking it sometime next year. I realized that Math is just steps and if you have a firm foundation on the previous step then the next step isn't that hard either. Good Luck no matter how well you do.

east tennessee nursing schools
Does anyone have any experience or heard anyone compare some of the east tennessee nursing schools? I'm just getting started with my prereqs but the differences between the prereqs at UTK nursing school are vastly different than the prereqs at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville or Tennessee Wesleyan (those two are very similar).

which articulation path to choose
I'm just now starting my prereqs but I feel like I have to choose which path of articulation to choose NOW. I am going to a CC right now and will hopefully be transferring to get my bsn. There are two schools that are close to me that have articulation agreements with my CC. One school is an hour drive away and is a bit more "prestigious" than the other school. The math prereqs for it are Finite Math, Basic Calc, Prob and Stat, and I would have to take College Algebra before any of these as well as an intro to calc. The science prereqs are of course a & p, and five other biologys. The second school is about an 1 1/2-2 hour drive away isn't as prestigious but is still a good school and the math prereqs for it are college algebra and statistical reasoning. the science is a &p I and II and Microbiology, and intro to chem I. I'm almost positive that I am going to go on to get an advanced degree of some sort after I'm done (np or crna). I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and take everything for the first school or do for the 2nd school (which btw is also not as expensive as the first school either). wwyd? I'm not sure if I'm supposed to mention the names of the institutions here but I will if it's ok. Thanks for your patience, Janie
