NPI needed for discounts?
I am trying to get the Verizon discount for nurses but you have to have an NPI number to be verified by ID.me. I am a new grad and just went through orientation at my hospital, and I've never even heard of an NPI before now. Isn't that usually just for NP's? Do RN's get them from employers?

Good Samaritan Protection debate
I am a nursing student in FL getting ready to take the NCLEX and my husband is a retired physician. We were discussing the Good Samaritan law and somehow got onto the topic of applying tourniquets. He thinks that if you are a nurse or doctor you could get sued for applying a tourniquet that results in patient harm, because you have to be specially trained for that. I say that if you are acting in good faith, you are protected just like people who are not health care providers are. Essentially, the plaintiff would have to prove gross negligence - that you willfully or knowingly hurt them. Anyone know for sure which is right?

Hope for bullying?
I said "put a stop to it when we see it" You said we should not "sit by and watch bullying" How is what I said "coddling" and what you said is not? Of COURSE people should learn to speak up for themselves - especially in nursing, because patients can become argumentative and aggressive, not mention dealing with families who may be subverting healthcare for your patient. But there is no excuse whatsoever for people you work with - fellow nurses- to be condescending, unhelpful, rude, dismissive, or hostile. None. And when newer nurses come into the profession, they are awed and a intimidated by the more experienced nurses on the unit. It takes some time for new nurses to feel like REAL nurses, so in the beginning they are often not very confident. Helping them succeed at gaining confidence and stopping bullying in its tracks is not coddling.

Hope for bullying?
I am not a bullying target, really, because I am older, not shy, a people person and (thanks to my ex-husband) really good at peaceable conflict resolution. On my last clinical rotation, a nurse came to talk to me about something because she thought I was the clinical instructor LOL. While I agree that everyone must learn to stand up for themselves, I don't think anything is going to change if everyone takes the attitude "As long as they're not bullying you, don't worry about it". I asked a friend in my nursing school who is 20 years old (she works as a PCA) if she has seen bullying and if she thinks the younger nurses are different because of school programs and such. She said "Oh yeah, I've seen someone get bullied and it got shut down and dealt with immediately." I just wondered if any of you have seen the same or similar. We older healthcare professionals need to put a stop to it when we see it. It discourages people from entering the profession and Lord knows we need more people!

Quitting Before My Four Weeks Notice
I was going to come here to say this. It is perfectly legit to call out because going to work is unhealthy for you - mentally or physically. If you are miserable, stressed and anxious at work, that's not good for your patients either. You can't control what anyone says after you leave unfortunately, but depending on your state's laws, it may be illegal for your former employer to say anything except for confirming that you were employed there. I seriously doubt that calling out for the last few days of a 4-week (!!) notice is going to get you black-balled in the industry - that seems a bit dramatic.

Hope for bullying?
I am an older nursing student and much of my class is between 19-24 years old. I know from my own kids (15 and 20) that they are MUCH more sensitive about recognizing and stopping bullying behavior because the schools have done a much better job educating kids about it. My question is this: do you as a nurse find that you have seen a change in the prevalence of bullying tolerance on your units due to the influx of younger nurses? I am really hoping that it crosses into nursing.

Santa Fe College ADN Fall 2021
It wasn't on the application itself? That's very strange, because as far as I know it definitely does count. If I were you I'd just call and ask - the staff and faculty are super nice. The ph# is 352-395-5650 for the Health Sciences dept.

Santa Fe College ADN Fall 2021
Go to the page on the SF site for nursing - scroll down to the criteria/points drop down https://www.sfcollege.edu/programs/3303/ I don't see it on there, but you also get points for previous medical training like LPN and CNA I believe

Using Your Nursing Credentials to Validate Anti-Vaxxer Theories
I didn't actually know this, so I looked it up. Given that the federal government has stated that employers can mandate the Covid vaccine, it AMAZES me that there are hospitals that don't do it. It's crazy to me. I am in nursing school and we have all been required to get the vaccine so that we can do clinicals in the 3 hospitals here in town. The VA has mandated every employee to get them, but until this month, the other two had not. So while nursing students had to have it, the NURSES were not actually required. We are having problems finding enough patients to work with because the hospitals are overrun with Covid patients and we're not allowed to be in the same area with them. They've spilled over into every ward. Last year, the cohort ahead of us got NO clinicals (only virtual). Get your damn shots, people. It makes me want to scream.

Using Your Nursing Credentials to Validate Anti-Vaxxer Theories
That is such a great and important point - stay in your lane. I also agree that there should be consequences. If the ANA can discipline you or remove your license for "conduct unbecoming" like acting inappropriately in public or on social media, or getting a DUI for that matter, they should look at sanctioning behavior that contradicts the CDC and ANA recommendations regarding COVID vaccines. By the way, the FDA approved the Pfizer vaccine... curious to know if now these same people who were preaching distrust have done an about-face and told people, "It's approved! Go get vaccinated!" Haven't see that yet...

Mean girls in Pre-Req / Nursing School, how do you deal with them?
If you let them get to you, they win. DON'T LET THEM WIN. When I look at mean girls, I think about how pathetic, empty and meaningless their lives must be if this is how they entertain themselves. It's sad and I feel sorry for them. You do you, girl. Be the best you can be, ignore all the B.S. and focus on your future.

Patient Refusing Unvaccinated RN
THIS. SO much this. Added to the fact that patients absolutely should advocate for their own and loved one's safety and well-being, and their wishes should be accommodated (within reason of course). The fact that there was any debate at all about whether the request to swap out nurses should have been accommodated is worrisome.
