GCU ABSN
Sim labs usually were 7:30a-2p. Clinicals usually between 6a-6p. Most exams and labs were scheduled before 2pm. Your last semester you can apply for a special residency and you have the option to do Night Shift for that.

Hi! I’m graduating in 2 weeks from the sun city campus in Phoenix, AZ. My opinion: there’s going to be issues with any nursing school. I had some gripes, mostly with last minute changes and lack of communication. At the end of the day, if you’re used to online school, teaching yourself with supplied materials, are flexible, and are a self-motivator, it’s not a bad way to quickly get your BSN. I feel ready to take the NCLEX and really feel like we will have a 100% first time pass rate in my cohort. My class started with 24 people I think and we now have 17. Each semester gets easier and more fun, the last semester is a lot of busy work online and mostly dedicated to passing the NCLEX and getting you a job. From what I’ve heard from my friends in other nursing schools in Az, we have had better clinical experiences and opportunities… I was annoyed that we spent our critical care rotation in the PCU. That didn’t happen to everyone though. PS you will only be doing clinicals at Banner Hospitals and they could be really far from campus, but they try their best to get nearby hospitals. Also, MOST of the instructors/staff are incredibly kind and caring. I don’t think it’s a school I’d sit on a waitlist for, but if you are trying to be a nurse ASAP it’s fast, easy to get into, and they do care about their first time NCLEX pass rates unlike some other turn and burn colleges. I already secured a job on the unit I did my nurse residency in which is in the trauma ICU at a huge level 1 trauma center! That’s good enough for me!
- How do you know when you've found your niche? Unhappy with nursing in general

Congrats on the conditional admission. This is a newer and not well advertised program through GCU, which is why it seems a little /too/ easy to get in. They are a well-regarded private Christian university and have a traditional BSN program with high first time NCLEX pass rates. Their clinicals for Boswell and main campus are mainly through Banner, which is also a highly regarded and vast healthcare system. Regional accreditation is much better than national accreditation, which sounds backwards but feel free to look up that fact ? I just started at Boswell this past May. The program is not without kinks because it is new, but the materials provided are nice, the director is personable and cares about you and your success, and the instructors I’ve worked with are high quality, especially the in-person ones. My complaints would be the staff-staff communication and consistency and the last-minute schedules/ time sensitive requests. It is a pretty tough program and people do fail and/or drop out, but I feel like that is to be expected in an ABSN program, especially where your didactic is online. Also, be ready to spend A LOT of time doing discussion boards. Would I go through with this program if I knew it would be the way it is? Probably. I’ve heard through the grape vines that ASU’s ABSN and U of A’s MEPN programs are easier, but I would be going elsewhere for the hope that it is easier, not a better quality or reputation. I ultimately chose this program because I’ll be done with this program before I would’ve been done with either of those, which was most important to me.

Help, I Feel Like A Failure
Glad to see you’re back in and doing better. I really struggled during my first undergrad with depression and anxiety and the best advice I can give you is to go to your schools disability office to discuss accommodations if you haven’t already! It needs to be a proactive thing and if you decide you’re good and decide you don’t need the accommodations then great don’t use them, but they’re there if/when you need them. Good luck, you can do this!!

As far as working, I don’t recommend. I work and regret going to work every day I go. The DQs take a ton of time, and the exams start piling up. They also have last minute scheduling things that can cause you to choose between work and school if you can’t find coverage. At least I’ve had that issue because I have to make my schedule 8 weeks in advance and cross my fingers that an exam or clinical or something doesn’t land on that day. I also have kids though so I’m balancing a lot of different roles and it is overwhelming. Maybe if you could find a VERY flexible job that is cool with schedule changes and you studying/doing homework and that’s your only other commitment, I guess it’s doable but if you could get away with not working I’d forego a job. Even if you snagged a job like that, I don’t think you’d be able to swing enough hours to cover rent.

Should I give a two weeks' notice?
I’ve left on a short notice because it was a dangerous working environment and felt that my certification was at stake. My manager also forced me to work a 16 hour shift (was supposed to be 12) even though I had to pick up my baby from childcare because she threatened to report me to BON for abandoning patients if I left. It was something that happened frequently because the oncoming staff knew we’d have to stay so they would habitually come in 2-4 hours late so they didn’t have to get the patients ready for the day. These people were friends with the manager so they’d never get punished. Me not being able to pick up my child was the last straw and I quit at the end of that shift. I have to answer for that in interviews but they’ve always been understanding when I say the ratios were so unsafe that patients were being harmed and admin wouldn’t do anything to accommodate. I’ve actually gotten every job I’ve interviewed for despite this. Use your best judgment. Are you being forced into unsafe situations? Are they then threatening to report you to BON if you don’t comply? Or are they just a**holes with a bad attitude?

I start this May! My friend got her MSN online at GCU and liked it so I feel pretty confident. I’m at the Sun City location and got a tour today. It looks pretty nice!
