I think a big problem is that nursing schools tend to promote traditional "medical" types of nursing: med-surg, ER, ICU, etc. Yes, most programs these days have a psych rotation in their curriculum, but a lot of professors and older nurses push the idea that you need to start off in a med-surg or telemetry unit after you graduate. A lot of nurses even discourage going into psych altogether, claiming that once you work psych you'll be pigeon-holed into that specialty forever because hospitals would rather hire nurses with bedside experience. Another valid concern is that nurses feel they'll lose their "hard" skills if they work in psych--skills like IV starts, head to toe assessments, urinary catheter insertions, etc. I'm sure there are other reasons why the overall interest in psych may be declining, but these are just a few I could think of off the top of my head. I don't work in psych currently, but it was one of my favorite rotations in nursing school and am still interested in the specialty. I'm a new grad so I've got lots of time to explore different specialties down the line--psych may very well be one of them.

I really don't know how they schedule/assign interview slots to applicants, the process is a mystery to me LOL. But I do know that when I went to my interview, there were a couple other applicants who had the same time slot as me and they went with other panels. So they're able to hold multiple interviews at the same time slot, if that makes sense. Hmmm that's interesting. Could also be out of 4 though. I wouldn't stress too much about it if I were you, without a scale or reference point those numbers are pretty much useless to us, know what I mean?

ER, CVU, telemetry/DOU. I think they mentioned there were close to 60 applicants; not sure if that's what you're asking. And no I think we got different panels. I had 4 women interviewing me.

Yes the interviewers did seem pretty friendly which I'm thankful for. What were your top 3 units?

Overall I think it went well, they asked a bunch of those behavioral-type questions and I felt that I answered them decently. They threw in a clinical scenario question at the very end though, and I honestly stumbled a bit on that one. I'm pretty sure I missed a few pieces of info that they were looking for but the interviewers seemed pleased at the end of the interview so IDK. Did you interview there?

Did you ever receive a link to schedule an interview? I'm kind of in the same boat as you--I applied last week to Tarzana (I think on Saturday) and have yet to receive anything. I'm wondering if they've stopped replying to applicants due to their interview slots filling up.

I applied to St Joseph's this morning and received a link to schedule an interview. For me it only gives me two dates to choose from, the 27th and 28th of June. Did anybody get different dates? Neither of those dates work for me as I won't be in town that week.

I appreciate the detailed response! I've looked into a lot of these careers and they do indeed seem to have a good return on investment. I'm not 100% sure what my plans will be after being a nurse for a few years, but it's good to know there are a lot of options out there.

Hey! Current nursing student here. I am interested in health care and have no intention of changing my route any time soon, especially after working so hard to merely get into a nursing program. However, I know that bedside nursing is not my end goal and I will most likely go to grad school at some point to advance my career, or simply switch to a different career within the field. I am curious, what are some examples of the non-nursing options that you are referring to in your post?

As long as you meet all the requirements for applying to the program, you will be entered into a lottery system with all the other qualified applicants for that semester; at that point it's essentially a game of luck as to who gets admitted and who gets rejected. This particular program does not necessarily consider things like previous healthcare experience, volunteer hours, etc.

Thanks for the detailed response! I appreciate all the insight. I guess every school/program has its ups and downs. Sorry to hear that you guys are losing faculty; I know the inspiration and influence that a good professor can have on a student. The important thing is you know that you've picked the right field. Hey all, When I created this topic I meant for it to be a safe place where we could simply share our thoughts and questions about the application process for Valley's nursing program. That being said, I'd like to kindly ask everyone here to be nice to each other; I know it's stressful and hard to wait for the results of your application, so I understand the strong emotions. But as someone previously mentioned, this is a place to help our fellow pre-nursing students and keep each other updated, so some respect and modesty would be appreciated. I can confirm that calls have been made to a number of students about sending their TEAS scores, and I can also confirm that a small number of applicants have been accepted into the program already. This does not necessarily mean that the admission cycle is complete, nor that you won't get in if you didn't receive a call. I would advise everyone to keep waiting until you get a call and/or email about the status of your application--it seems that they are still in the process of accepting students at the moment. Good luck to all who applied!

The same happened to me. Did they leave a voicemail telling you to call them back? Also check your student email in case they try to contact you through that. Trying to reach them at the office is a little difficult.

Hey everyone, I figured I'd make a topic for LAVC's ADN program since I didn't see any that have already been posted. Just wanted to create a group where we can share comments/questions and the like. Typically the results for LAVC take a long time to come out (last year they were delivered in late July), but hopefully with the limited number of applicants this semester the results will come out a bit sooner. You should email them as well. I sent them a message saying that my cumulative GPA is posted on the final page of my transcript, and soon after they sent me a confirmation and an invitation to send my TEAS score. I guess they didn't see it the first time they checked. If you email them be sure to specify on which page your GPA is listed because I think it may be easy to miss.

Yeah, I'll definitely send them an email tomorrow morning. Appreciate the advice! That sounds like it must have been frustrating for your friend haha. With such a large amount of applicants I'm not surprised that little errors like that are popping up. I'll email them and see what they say. Thanks for the input.

Did anyone else here get an email saying that they're ineligible because their LACCD transcript doesn't list cumulative GPA? I'm wondering if other students who have taken classes within the LACCD received the same email. I checked my unofficial transcripts and the cumulative GPA is clearly listed at the end of the report, so I'm not sure if this is a mistake on their end.

I'm still waiting for the results of the counselor eval as well; I submitted the form about 3 weeks ago so I'm not sure how much longer it'll be. Hopefully we'll get the results soon.
