asking for help
Hi all, I have a few years of nursing experience (home care/inpatient) and starting a new job as a school nurse and I still have lots to learn. I suffer from the "I think I should know everything" syndrome :) I had a really bad experience in my first nursing job inpatient when I asked questions during orientation if I did not know how to do something so I am hesitant at times. Does anyone have some great phrases to say to your boss, colleagues, preceptor how to ask for help when you do not know something or how to do something (regardless of if you really should or not)? for example the other day I needed to take a temp on a young child and I had never done it on this age before, I could not quite get the probe of the tympanic thermometer in the child's ear. I felt stupid - I did get it eventually but I was worried about putting it in too deep. ex "maybe I should know how to do this, but I have never had an opportunity to practice this before, would you mind showing me how you do this?"..... thanks!!

COVID-19: Nurse Shortages
Hi all, It is nice to hear what you know. LIke I said I am a new nurse. However I have an MPH and have been on the business side for 30 years. It would be great if there was a central portal where ALL hospitals, health departments, etc could list needs. Folks could then do searches there rather than haphazardly. At least that is what it feels like to me. Rather than furlough, if nurses want, send them to where this is a need now. These places then do the return. They learn so when at "home" they have the knowledge to better tackle it with experience and lessons learned. I think it strange to ask retired nurses to come back... given age, I would think they are part of the high-risk group...

COVID-19: Nurse Shortages
Hi I am a relatively new nurse with a few months inpatient and now doing some home care. I thought this would be a great opportunity to help and get some experience, even if to backfill. There is so much talk about the shortage but is is so hard to figure out where the jobs are!! I have looked on DPH, HHS, hospital sites, ANA, state sites (I have a MPH). Travel nursing recruiters seem to be hiring quite a bit. My sense is they are price gouging. Does anyone know where to look. I am licensed in 2 states. There seems to be a lot of retired nurses being asked to come back. I would think they would also be looking at registered nurses in the state and doing outreach there. Just does not make sense to me.... Would love folks thoughts and suggestions. K
