Is emergency certification, i.e. acls, etc for rn's only?
I am a fellow LPN myself and am ACLS, PALS, AND NRP certified. As long as you are a licensed professional LPN, medic, EMT even non -licensed you can take it. I am auditing TNCC this November. Go for it! I got all my certifications because I graduate with my RN in 6 months and just got an intership with a new hospital with a brand new-ER and they just applied for their Trauma license, they offered me a sweet deal! $5000 scholarship, $2000 sign-on bonus and gave me credit for being an LPN so my base will be higher than a new grad. I worked as an ER Tech for a year at a Level 1 Trauma center and learned the most I had ever had in any classroom, and job combined. Expanding your knowledge base is awesome! You'll find how much you really already know and this just enhances your talents! Good Luck! Gen!

Men vs. Women
Where I worked, a level 1 Trauma Center, there were plenty of men & usually they are the best nurses around! Most were mentors for the preceptorship program, & they didn't mind answering a lot of questions from me since I am doing the LPN-RN transition program. I love those awesome male nurses:D they stay out of the gossip too! (Strong, silent types) Our ER is geared to a 3:1. There are 6 areas, Acute Trauma-MVA's, ortho stuff, 3-4 nurses plus one tech. Acute Medical-Chest pains, strokes, OD's- 7 beds plus 2 when packed(Hall & by the sink) 3-4 nurses plus 1 tech Multi treatment-"Pelvic Patch"-gynnie rooms, 1-eye room, 6 beds plus 5 hall beds & 2 isolations rooms again 3-4 nurses plus one tech who also assigned to Trauma Resus Unit with 4 Trauma beds & 2 Trauma nurses. Trauma is a seperate department from the main ED but they float & help when there are no Traumas in. The tech here is responsible to drive the hospital ambulance 1 block to the helipad at the front of the hospital & work the trauma as well, poor helipad design, a new ER with helipad on top is in the works for 2003. Minor care has 4 curtained rooms with 1 doc, 1 nurse, & 1 tech, sweet!! The hardest job of all is being an ER Tech, you do it all except pass meds, EKG's , Foleys, I busted my A** for a whole year working as one, but the phlebotomy, IV skills I got & the experience I got is invaluable! It has definitely helped me in my RN program! I can't wait only 8 more months till I graduate!

Co-workers with poor grooming habits
Yup I think we've all worked with a few smellies ! I personally don't like caps. Only to wear to candlelighting!:) I asked why they stopped wearing them once & my Prof. said it transmits a lot of nosocomial infections. Think about it, you change scrubs daily but you dont wash or change your cap daily! Eew gross! i know its kept clean but its a moving vector! I understand it looks very nurse like and all. I personally have every scrub color and print known to man. I love buying new scrubs! I don't even walk into my bedroom with them dirty, straight to the laundry basket. My work Birki's stay in the garage too! Call me paranoid! We are the health care advocates so we should all look the part! Not like were hungover from last nites party!
