H1N1 vaccine... why it should be MY choice!
I'd like to see hospitals make flu vaccinations mandatory for doctors???????? LOL Yeah right! That would never happen!

H1N1 vaccine... why it should be MY choice!
People who work in the medical profession should be informed enough to realize that big brother and big pharma do not have the people's best interest in mind. Baxter patented their vaccine in August of 2008 and the first real outbreak of swine flu happened in March 2009. Stats like this are just the tip of the iceberg. Nurses and everyone else need to do their research. Look into the Gardasil HPV vaccine, look into Gulf War syndrome and the theory behind military vaccination, research the low rates of Austism among Amish children who don't get vaccinated. Instead of swallowing what the government, doctors, and worst of all your nursing manager tells you, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH and make an informed decision. Quit relying on the media as well. They are bought and paid for.

Soft scrubs for a tall skinny male=don't exist
None of these posters know what they are talking about because none of them have your problem, judging by their replies. IGUANA MEDS scrubs DO NOT HAVE TALL SIZES and none of their scrubs are going to fit any guy that has a 33+ inseam. I know I'm 6'5 and wear a 36x34 jean size/pant size. I'm not as skinny as the OP but I've found the best bet is Street Scrubs. Google them. Dickies and Landau and a few other companies make cotton bottoms in long sizes but you'll never be able to find a top that matches that is long and not baggy or gigantic around the waist and chest. Buying scrubs for tall guys SUCKS BIGTIME! Just one more reason why I hate this profession! LOL :)

proud to call myself a NURSE
Oh brother.......some of these replies are funny. Nursing is a hard profession but by no means is it the "hardest". Come on! And yeah everyone loves to say how great a profession nursing is and how much respect they evidently have for us......but actions speak louder than words and most people couldn't nor wouldn't do what we do, espeically for what we are paid compared to other technical/highly educated professions. FAR FROM IT! For as much responsibility as nurses have they are paid crap and treated like crap. I mean honestly we have as much responsibility as MD's in a lot of ways yet we have a 5th of their education and training and make A LOT less than they do. But when your patient goes downhill who is at the bedside dealing with it at a moment's notice? The sleepy doctor who you just woke up? NO. The RN or the rapid response nurses. Who spends hours with a patient monitoring their change in condition while the doctor barely spends 5 minutes with them? The RN. Who also has to act like a janitor, secretary, relationship/family/personal counselor??????? THE RN! I'm two years into this profession and if it wasn't for the crappy economy I'd be getting the hell out and would NEVER recommend this profession to anyone. I wish I never would have switched majors and wasted the money I did. I'm lucky to have a job and make decent money AND make a difference in people's lives but come on.......in this day and age nursing hasn't really changed all that much compared to decades past. We still need a doctor's order for Tylenol and ice packs! By the way everyone says how great of a nurse I am :) LOL

SoCal RN possible move to OR??????
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice on moving to OR and working as an experienced RN? By the time I move I will have had 3 years experience working on a progressive care/stroke/tele unit. I'm a 30 year old male, ACLS certified, have my NIH stroke certifications, am an ADN, and will hopefully finish my PCCN by the time I move. I have heard mixed opinions on the OR nursing environment as of late. I've heard as long as you have experience you can find jobs. Others say it's very hard. My wife (she grew up in Oregon) and I are thinking about moving to the Sherwood/Tualatin area. What does an experienced RN make in OR? My base pay right now is around $28/hr. I work nights so I get night shift differential on top of that. My nursing experience in CA has been great. I make good money, the patient staffing is great, co-workers/managers are awesome and even in this economy I can pick up extra shifts and make more money. How are the staffing ratios in OR? I also heard some of the hospitals like Kaiser are unionized? I'm looking at Kaiser, OHSU, and the VA. Possibly, Salem hospital in OR. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is it normal to feel overwhelmed?
Guys I was just wondering if you think it's normal to feel overwhelmed the first year of nursing school? I really am enjoying my classes and did well my first semester. However, I get nervous when I think about the fact that I'll be an RN in a year and a half (it's a two year RN program). Sometimes I wonder if I'm where I'm supposed to be? Am I behind? Am I ahead? Am I supposed to know that yet? My clinical instructor says I did a great job in clinicals etc. I guess it's just weird to think I'll be an RN i.e. a professional responsible for people's lives and well being a year and a half from now. As a graduate nurse do you just get thrown into a job and have to "figure" it out or do you get a little nurturing those first few months on the job?

Not sure NROTC program is for me. Any advice please?
Well every Navy nurse I talked to has spent a lot of time on a ship. Definitely not my bag. I'm going for the Air Force Nursing corp once I get my bachelors if I decide on military nursing. Either that or Army. No way I could spend 6 mos on a ship. The military is not for everyone. Even as an officer you'll have to do PT. Just remember if you can make it through what you're going through now everything else will be downhill. I'd say hang in there. Every military nurse I've talked to regardless of the branch loves it.

Holistic RN or chiropractic?
Oh and by the way a good Chiro can make very good money. There are a lot of bad ones out there though that give the field a negative stigma. Atleast you can be in business for yourself. Chiro is a really neat field. You can incorporate so much in providing care for your patients. Nutrition, massage....i.e. like you mentioned.

Holistic RN or chiropractic?
Why aren't you following through with Premed out of curiosity. Chiropractors have worked wonders for me and a good chiropractor is an amazing and very important practitioner of healthcare in my opinion. However, you will not find many people in mainstream healthcare i..e doctors, PT's and nurses telling you that. It's really sad to hear physical therapists talk about chiropractors. The former has never done anything worthwhile for me. However, this is coming from a future nurse who is a big proponent of alternative medicine. I think holistic nursing is a wonderful field of nursing to get into. I like it because it allows you more often than not to go against the grain of western medicine which for all intents and purposes is heavily based on drugs and invasive surgery unfortunately.

Breast Implants
Truer words have never been spoken. Being out of shape is one thing but having bad hygiene is another. That's just laziness. A bigger, juicier butt on an out of shape woman is much sexier than a beer belly I'll give you that. :)

Breast Implants
BBing= Bodybuilding not BlingBling.

Breast Implants
Not at all. That was an "in general" statement.
-
Breast Implants
True! I see a lot of out of shape men too, but more overweight married women.
-
Breast Implants
Sorry I will take the RN from my handle.
-
Breast Implants
Most women let themselves go once their married. Kids is just an excuse.

Breast Implants
And what do I have no clue about? The fact that I used RN after my handle and I'm not actually an RN yet?
-
Breast Implants
So what? LOL I could have used the handle President Bush as my handle. THIS IS A MESSAGE BOARD!!! Relax. I simply made a point. You (women and nurses in general not specifically you) sit there and condone even glorify women who have cosmetic surgery yet will chastize and demonize men for using anabolic steroids. You snidely remarked "steroids are illegal." That brought me to the issue of raw milk. Raw milk is illegal too. I was trying to point out the fallacy in your comment. So what if they are illegal? Then you call me dangerous, uncompassionate etc. Why do I want to be a nurse? Number one I want to help people and am very much a patient advocate in many regards but that doesn't mean I want to do bedside nursing my whole life. There are plenty of outlets in the nursing profession where I can pursue my healthcare passions. And I happen to think nurses make decent money sometimes great money considering. How many jobs do you know of where you can get an associates degree and get out making 40k, with job security, great benefits, flexibility etc. Let's be honest none of us would work if we didn't have to so yes those things are important to me.

I don't remember you asking me a question. And yes I understand why nurses come here. But hypocrisy, especially from fellow (old ones at that) nurses/nursing students whatever is something I can't stand. Also people that talk about a subject they have no clue about. And I never attacked anyone on here personally.

Breast Implants
Sorry I should have clarified. They weren't my patients and they were not in a clinical setting. But you are right it would be outside of my scope of practice if I were to recommend that to patients.

Breast Implants
And you wonder why the nursing profession gets no respect. The same profession that will sit there and say "Oh Mr. Johnson I'm so sorry that you have heart disease.....I can only imagine how hard this must be for you......here take these pills!!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry as a nurse I will not succumb to the pill pushing....self depricating.....lazy behavior I see among patients and other healthcare professionals. I will educate my patients and push them as much as I can and give them the knowledge and the confidence and the help and compassion that they need to change their lives. That to me is what nursing is about. I recently introduced the benefits of raw milk (which is in fact illegal) to a patient with arthritis and to a young mother who's child has asthma. They couldn't believe the difference. The man's arthritis improved tremendously and the child now rare suffers an asthma attack. As a healthcare professional you will only hear the propaganda concerning the risks of raw milk.

I have a lot of compassion. But where my compassion ends is where self pity and laziness begins. Just because I'm a nurse doesn't mean I have to accept everything and everyone! I'm sorry but a majority of the women in my nursing classes are fat and overweight and they don't have some preexisting medical condition nor any mitigating circumstances or no more of a chaotic life than anyone else that prevents them from exercising. Kids and a family are no excuse. I witness what some of my "fellow" nursing students eat on a daily basis.

Breast Implants
I agree with you 100%. I think there is nothing wrong with women who get breast implants or even other cosmetic procedures. Just like a man with a large member size is does not necessarily equate to inreased gratification. I honestly don't like the feel of fake breasts but they usually look very nice. I'm more of a butt guy. Boobs, albeit bigger ones, are not going to make women more self confident if they aren't already secure enough in themselves. Besides a woman with small boobs and a great body i..e one who's in shape is much more attractive than a woman who is out of shape but yet had big boobs. The problem nowadays is too many women are "out of shape." Too many men are too!!!! It's disgusting, especially among the healthcare field and nursing in particular. Look at all the fat women in my classes. And they are gonna be a patient advocate for health, nutrition, and the prevention of disease? LMAO! I work very hard for the body that I have because it gives me confidence in all aspects.....the confidence to know that I'm physicall healthy and better able to ward off disease, I look good so I feel good.....I'm in shape so my metabolism.....Cardio system etc. is much healthier. Also I eat right. It takes discipline that a lot of people just don't have nowadays. After 12 hours on my feet all day, listening to bitchy patients and arrogant doctors I can't wait to go home and hit the gym or the pavement!!!!!!
