University of Miami ABSN Summer 2018
I had a 3.2 undergrad GPA but I went to a very competitive school in the northeast, so I believe they may have taken this into consideration. I focused a lot on my prerequisites this past year and got a 3.9 pre-req GPA (2 more currently pending by the time I applied to UM). I have been working as a home health aide for a senior woman the past year. Other than that, my background is probably not your typical ABSN student-- I used to work in financial services before I became and aide! But, I have volunteered in hospitals since high school and I've always had a passion for working in the medical field so I talked about that in my essay. Hope that helps:) Good luck!

Mandatory Vaccine Waiver in Nursing School/Clinicals
Thank you for the info. Did you get the MMRV vaccines when you were younger? I got MMR (Varicella wasn't out yet, but I did have chicken pox). But I got positive antibody titers for Varicella, so I believe as long as you produce positive antibody titers you won't have to get boosters. Not sure if that was the case for you?

Mandatory Vaccine Waiver in Nursing School/Clinicals
no need for the attitude..."a little googling goes a long way." I'm not stupid. Obviously those are the websites that come up...standard government-run organization websites just for informational purposes. Any person with a pulse who has a computer can find that information within 5 seconds... Anyways, that wasn't the question I asked. I asked about temporary exemptions during school. Please learn how to read before replying to a comment.

What about exemptions for certain vaccines for someone who is newly pregnant? Have all vaccines and immunizations that school requires, but only need Tdap booster and flu vaccine. Could pregnancy be a legit exemption in this case? Obviously have no problem with vaccines once baby is born (will be about halfway through semester, but clinicals will have already started).

no you shouldn't be worried because it takes a long time. I spoke with someone in admissions and they told me that even those who submitted by the deadline (Feb 1) will have a decision by the end of March. It seems like they are doing acceptances in 2 week waves. It makes sense because once accepted, you have 2 weeks to accept or decline

I just spoke to someone in admissions. And what people on here are saying is correct - they send out decisions in waves. They just sent out a round of decisions, so it will be 2 weeks until the next one (they send them out that way, because accepted students get 2 weeks to accept or decline offer). She said that ultimately, all decisions will be made by the end of march. I know that sounds frustrating because it's a month from now lol, but at least that confirms that even if you applied late, the latest you'll hear is a month from now.

For all of you that have been accepted, did UM say you had to take additional tests to be accepted? One school I was accepted to is requiring the Kaplan pre-nursing test. But they never mentioned it until after sending out acceptances. So annoying! I am just wondering if UM has any of these last-minute curve balls? I know that acceptance is conditional upon completing all pre-reqs w. required grades, immunization records, etc. That's a given and I understand and it's noted prior to even applying. But I'm specifically referring to any additional tests, courses, etc?

I used to live in Miami. I loved it, but it's not for everyone. It's very culturally diverse and not the safest place in Florida, but then again, you have to be careful everywhere really, right? If you have children then definitely try and live close to campus in Coral Gables. It's a pretty family-friendly neighborhood and obviously being close to campus is always a huge plus. UM's website has a student life and housing section. It's pretty cool actually very detailed. Definitely look through those!

I know. They says there's a deadline which leads us to assume everyone is reviewed at the same time, but from what people are saying here, it's really a rolling admissions process. If I had known that, I defintiely would have applied earlier. However, they only give accepted students 2 weeks to accept or decline admissions offer. That's not much time for most people to figure out housing, get finances together, etc, so that could mean that a lot of people will back out and leave more spaces for people like us who applied late lol

I don't think they will tell you over the phone. It's hard to get a straight answer, but I think they probably have so many people calling and emailing that they just are too busy to go through everyones file if someone calls. They do say that CaneLink may take a while to change status to "complete," so it's possible that an application may be complete but just will not show for a while. I applied January 24 and NursingCAS JUST verified my GPA/transcripts. My status on CaneLink is still Incomplete lol I guess it's just waiting now.

Interesting. I think they accept a lot of out of state students because a lot of people in florida will also apply to state schools and if accepted, will most likely choose the state school over UM since it's a fraction of the price. So maybe they don't want to "waste" acceptances on in-state FL students because in the past, they have chosen state schools over UM? That would be my guess. I'm from NY but have lived in FL for a year so I'm technically in-state. Almost wonder if I should have kept my NY address and applied lol oh well too late now. The state schools near me all have January start dates. I have 2 more prereqs left and I'll be done the first week of May and really don't want to wait until January to start an ABSN program...so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for UM!!

Yes I've seen mixed reviews and some of them really bad. However, I noticed a lot of the comments are along the lines of "no one will help you" etc. I am taking prereqs with them and so far I've found my professors to be very accommodating and responsive. They are all on the NY campus, so I am hoping that's what the FL campus is like. Let me know if you find out anything else!
