Hi All, I was wondering if anyone worked for an alternative school or school with trouble high schoolers? There is a position in my area and I am interested to see how anyone's experience may be in that arena. I am sure it comes with challenges...I have only worked with elementary school so I know this would be a big change. Thank you!

Hi all, I am fairly new to school nursing and am wondering how much teaching you give to staff as well as students. I believe I am supposed to teach puberty to 4th and 5th grade before the end of the year with the PE teacher. I also was wondering how much teaching is done for staff in terms of medication delegation (epi-pens, inhalers, etc.). I would prefer to do a small group (or even 1:1!) as I am quite nervous in large groups. Just wondering what experiences you all have in this area. Thanks for any information you may have.

I am at 68 K, happy with that. It is a charter school so it is a longer year (212 days for nursing staff) and 7:30-3:30. I started in Oct and am getting the hang of it!!

I really appreciate all the kind words!! I am putting one foot in front of the other. Thankfully there are other nurses in the district and I hope to make friends :) We use health office anywhere (not my fave) and Aspen for student info. Hi Y'all, It is my first week as a school nurse at an elementary school, I am feeling a little bit stressed out. I think it is because I am used to having orientation and training last more than a day. I feel as though there is a million questions with little outside support (my supervisor is new also). I have no clue about immunization compliance and how to to complete this, as well as how to start with health screenings, not even sure how to use the equipment. Plus I am in MA and have to get a state DESE license and take a literacy test, and some mandatory training. I know I have a year to do these things but then I feel like I am constantly have new things come up that I have NO CLUE how to do, like new students files (what am I supposed to do with these??), health summarys, etc, and there is both paper and 2 different student computer records that I need to learn. What happens when orders expire and the parents wont return my calls/letters? I'm sorry for the long vent but anyone who says that school nursing is easy, esp in the beginning, is probably lying the kids are cute but a lot of them are "testing" me, it can get very busy very fast. I could use a few words of encouragement as a new school nurse...Thanks for listening.

Helloooo fellow school nurses, I am starting in Oct. at an elementary school k-5 around 300 children and am looking for advice for a school nurse newbie. I have a background in adult psych/dual diagnosis and was looking for a change. I am nervous but excited to start this new venture, but am a bit overwhelmed on where to start. Any good books/resources/things to prepare for (other than this site)? I am from MA so I will need DESE certification too and am a little confused about that as well, and what needs to be done. Please help if you can, any bit of knowledge helps. Thanks in advance!! Ally
