Hey All, I am a Canadian RN BSN looking to relocate to the USA. I have all of the requirements to do so in terms of exams, immigration, etc. All I need is to find a job! I have 8 years OR experience at a large hospital in Canada. One of the things I'm finding is that there seems to be a difference in the way OR's are staffed in terms of Circulating and Scrub Nurse. I am getting the impression that as the RN BSN I will be doing the Circulating and a Tech will do the scrubbing? Here we do not have that. We are all RN's who scrub and circulate. Is this the case mostly in the USA? Is it something I should be concerned about? I don't want to lose my Scrub skills! Should I avoid jobs that are posted as Circulating RN only? What if I only circulate but then want to apply for a job elsewhere that requires me to do both? Would I be at a disadvantage? Also in Canada we are extremely patient focused, safety focused and we also are unionized. Surgeons here respect RN's (for the most part)..... There's always a few that are difficult. I've always assumed it would be similar in the US.... Am I right? Any info appreciated! Thanks for reading!

Hi All, I was just wondering if anyone who was an RN in Canada and relocated to the USA is willing to share their thoughts and experiences on their relocation. I am not so interested in the process as I've been through all of that and am now licensed in CA. Things I'm interested in hearing about are: Did you use a recruitment company for placement? (I am looking for permanent placement and green card sponsorship). How did you find just working and living in the US overall? I am 35 and have two young children and have been an OR RN in Canada since I graduated in 2003. We want to live somewhere with a nice, mild climate. Please share where you live and why you like it. And where you work! Share anything! Thanks for your time!

Can you explain what you mean by that, Silverdragon? I am having my University write a letter with further details regarding my Obstetrical training.

Hi Mwood: Did you see my post? I am also a Canadian nurse applying for license by endorsement. I did all steps as well and have been told I'm deficient in OB hours. Not sure what that means the letter doesn't give details. I have been given 3 years to "fix". Their suggestion is to take an OB course at one of their approved Universities listed on their website which I've learned is an almost impossible and expensive task. I am hoping to sort this out with a more detailed letter from my Dean at my Nursing faculty. I graduated from U of Manitoba. Where did you graduate from and when? Many Canadian RN's have unfortunately faced this I am learning. Thanks for posting!

Fiona, if you can find a thread that's recent and specific to my situation I'd love to see it. I'm pretty sure I've looked at all of them! I'm specifically wondering if anyone has been able to sort this out without having to redo a course.

Silverdragon: I was lucky because I have an ITIN number because we file US taxes. This number is accepted in place of SSN.

Hi All, I'm wondering if anyone out there has been through this and can shed some light or anything. As said, I am a Canadian University of Manitoba graduate of BSN program in 2003. Always knew I wanted to end up in SoCal but unlike some of my other classmates I didn't apply for license right away. Met a boy, got married and had some kids and 14 years later I would like to pursue that dream! I am seeking permanent employment and relocation to CA with sponsorship for green card not short term travel nursing. I am doing this through a recruitment company called O'Grady Peyton. I am an operating room nurse. To get green card I have to agree to work in my placement of my choice for two years. Everything has been going fairly smoothly. I got my fingerprinting done in San Diego to save time last January. Then sent the rest of my paper work in to CA. When I finally heard from them 14 weeks later in April of 2017 they said that my Obstetrical clinical and theory hours needed further clarification and that they would request this info from my Board of Nursing. I should have been more on top of it but we were away for three weeks in the beginning of May and I assumed it was no problem and my board would take care of it. Silly me. I then received a letter from CA BON about a month later that I had been deemed deficient in my OB training and would need to fix this by taking an OB course at one of the CA BON approved schools. They have given me three years to do so. I then contacted my University who has no record of sending them anything other than the first package and transcripts. WHAT!!?? I am at a loss. I have now spoken with the associate dean and she is going to send a detailed breakdown. I am worried it is too late. Has anyone been through this? Is there any hope they will change their mind? Anyone have advice? The courses they speak of taking are pretty well impossible to find and cost anywhere from 7000-10,000 just for one course! Thank you for your time.

Has anyone ever found out the actual requirements for number of hours that CA BON is looking for? I was recently told by them that I am deficient in OBS training but I can't figure out what they want. I find it hard to believe because two nurses I know that graduated same year and program as me got CA license's. So frustrating!

Hi Shaunzy7: It's a couple years later but if you see this reply please respond! I also graduated from U of M. In 2003. I just finally got a letter from CBN saying that I am deficient in OBS clinical and theory hours. Did you get a license?

Hello, don"t know if you will see my post as it is a year later but I am going through the exact same thing right now! CBN has told me I am deficient in my OB training. Got my degree from U of Manitoba in 2003 and two other girls that graduated my year and class have CA licenses! Beyond frustrated. Trying to sort this out with U of M and then planning on appealing but I haven't been getting a lot of help from U of M. Seems they have better things to do then help their past Alumni. Anyways, what was the outcome for you and where did you have you're original degree from?
