Hello! I am a new grad who just accepted a position on a stepdown pediatric unit, starts in 2 months. In that time I would like to prepare myself for the position and find good books to read on what the life of pediatric nurses are like, what to expect and so on. Are there any books that you found helpful in your experience, what do you recommend? Thank you!I completely agree w ^^. I graduated 2nd week of December and took a break from nursing until after the holidays. I started studying 2nd week of January and had scheduled my exam for the end of January so I literally had 2 weeks to study. I was so close to rescheduling because i didn't "feel ready", but like immigrantnurse said, you never really feel fully prepared. I didn't end up rescheduling because the next opening date was the 2nd week of February and 2 weeks of studying was torture enough I knew I couldn't do 2 more weeks of nonstop studying- its so draining. Anyways, my advice is to just reschedule it to a closer date if you feel like you're doing well and are confident enough. If not, then just use the 3rd week to go over things you missed. Overall don't be so hard on yourself during this time, you'll do well wether you take it the 8th or the 15th. I found out about my offer exactly one week after my second interview. I had also asked them during my interview by when they would have decisions and they did tell me one week, so definitely ask your unit. 2. During my second interview with the nurse leaders and education manager they brought up the fact that the RN program's schedule will be ALL over the place. They said you mainly follow your preceptor's schedule but will also be doing didactic classes from time to time. They said you can be working days one day and nights the other. They also mentioned that you may absolutely not take any time off during the program. Lastly, my offer letter stated 3 12 hour shifts with no specification of day/nights, my guess is that it'll be determined once the 22 weeks are done. Good luck on your second interview! I think that most of your questions will be answered by your unit managers, but if they don't, definitely ask them, they'll inform you better than I can lol Good luck!I recently relocated from CT to CA and was originally scheduled for an in-person interview but I had to go back to CT for the week of my interview so i scheduled a live interview which then they did a phone interview lol confusing i know! i just wasnt sure since my whole schedule was messed up they messed up with my interviews and thats why they sent me the video one too or if that went together with the phone interview (i'll call them and find out). Anyways, i interviewed with 5West Stepdown phone call lasted exactly 20 mins.Thanks so much for all of your responses! I went with my gut feeling and declined the offer! Good news is, I was able to land another job at a small hospital to begin my nursing career! Yay! ?
