If people are getting into Nursing, just for the money, I fear you are going to be disappointed. I make fair money, would like to make more, but considering I have been a nurse for 15 years, it could be a lot better. Wayne

I am not a NP but have over 15 years of practice as an RN. I am in school now to get my MSN in nursing education. This same subject of salaries come up during a discussion in my class. My group found out some NP's are working as nursing educators and do not make the high salaries. Other NP's are working for speciality groups, one being a group of Cardiologist, and make excellent money but they work anywhere from 10 12 hours a day, Monday thru Friday. Amy, I am not a fan of tattoos on men or women but I know they are in vogue now and a lot of people are getting them in various locations all over their body. I am a former Army RN and the Army started having rules on where the tats could be placed, both on men and women. This was several years ago so things may have changed by now but the rule was the tat could not be visible outside the uniform, (i.e. neck, hands, wrists, and lower part of the legs). Long story short, do what makes you feel good about yourself and what you have on your body under your clothing is your business. Congratulations on completing nursing school and I hope you encourage others to join our profession,,, and quickly ! lol Wayne

Sassy, Have you looked into other schools of nursing? Perhaps, all SON are having the same problem? Too many applicants, too few instructors. ? Good luck with your BA and I hope you still have a desire to be a nurse when the opening comes. All nursing educators reading these posts, what is the solution to get more people into nursing schools? Thanks, Wayne

Your school is to be congratulated, in my opinion. I am not a big fan of essays as a tool for entrance but it's at least a start. If a prospective nursing student takes the time to make an effort to write a good essay, at least she/he has the desire to become a nursing student and a nurse, again, in my opinion. At least, everyone at this school gets a crack at getting into the program. I have to agee w/ "gsnitch2001", it the person behind the grades! Good luck in 2008, (why then? why not now? working on prereqs?) We need more nurses, this coming from a nurse who sees to many vacancies at my hospital. Wayne

If you want a job in a busy ED, go work for Saint Luke's downtown hospital or KU Medical Center. If you want a job in a less busy ED, go to Saint Luke's South, it's in the Overland Park area of Kansas City, in Johson county. If your wife is looking for a good med school, I recomment KU University at Kansas City, KS. It's associated with KUMC, the medical center. Good luck to you and to your wife. In my opinion and I in school now in a MSN degree program for Nursing education. It's both = Facilities that do allow nursing students are swamped by all the schools wanting clinical experience. There just isn't enough clinical time to go around. I know of one school that has night clinicals just so they can get their students some experience. Also, the lack of clinical instructors and nursing edcuators in general, is a big problem as well. Too many nursing educators are leaving the schools, some due to retirement age, others due to the poor salary for educators. This is a good discussion, more please !! Wayne

This is exactly what I mean, (the note above). We are going to have very smart nurses if we only allow people with GPA's of 3.9. Question? should GPA be the only factor in getting accepted to any nursing school? I say, no. Anyone? Wayne

okay, all, the person was just asking about what its like to be a military nurse. as a former army nurse and a fomer air force nurse, i can only say i enjoyed all my time i spent in both branches of the service. i also worked in critical care - working at ddeamc and the old fitzsimmons amc. i also worked in ed's when the brac lists closed many icu units. go talk to a recruiter, he/she can probably answer most of your questions adn concerns on deployment. if it doesn't suit you or your concerns, don't join, but good luck with either. we need good nurses everywhere!! wayne

Personally, I don't think you did anything wrong but the charge nurse did, your CI wants you to apologize so keep everyone happy, take your CI with you and offer the CN an apology. Chances are he/she was having a bad day and you being the student, get blamed or picked-on. Good luck with your studies, get through school, pass your boards and come work with me. My co-workers and I have more important issues than your situation. We have ill people to care for. =o) Wayne

NatKat, I think it's a true shame we can not get more people into nursing schools so we can have more nurses at the bedside taking care of sick people. So glad you finally made into school and your dedication to getting accepted shows your commitment to nursing. Good luck with school. I am in a MSN program now to get a degree in Nursing education. One problem with nursing schools is not enough nursing instructors to teach new nursing students. We have to fix this problem as well. again, good luck. Wayne
