Professional ethics

At last, after months of searching and waiting, I have found and applied a job that would fit my dream job in nursing, i.e., renal nursing (covering renal ward, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis). The hospital is offering a renal nursing programme that best cater those nurses (like me) who have no renal experience and would be trained to be a renal nurse all around.

The problem is, last month, I applied a job in new medical ward from other hospital and got a call yesterday that they were happy to hire me. I've just applied a job last Saturday in renal nursing programme and it'll take probably until next week for a reply from them.

The charge nurse in the medical ward is waiting for my decision until tomorrow since they're rushing to complete their list of nurses to employ on mid-June. If I said yes to them, then would I be professionally bound to stick with my "yes?" Is it professionally unethical to withdraw from them in case I'll be successful in my application from the other job that I really want? :no:

hmmm, you do have a dilemma here. I'm honestly not sure where you'd stand. Is it possible for you to contact your nurses board or union and seek advice before committing to anything.

It wouldn't go over too well taking the job then pulling out last minute I should think.

Alternatively, can you contact the renal nursing programme and explain your situation to them and see if they might be able to let you know if your application has been successful.

Thank you so much for the advice! Well, it happened that they already have enough and qualified applicants who have applied with the renal nursing programme. The HR said that they already selected the applicants for the programme and I applied late coz a lot responded on their ad in short time. That rests the case now. So, I've accepted the other job and will stay there until new opportunity knocks again to my door. Must not be my time yet. :monkeydance:

I'm both glad and sad for you. Glad, because you didn't have to face the issue of telling a definite employer that you were thinking of not accepting their offer against a potential job/training, but sad that you didn't get your 'dream job'. Hey, but there is always the future, and maybe now you will have time to prepare a bit for it???

Hep, hep, hep!!! I don't know if this is a trick of time but I got a call from my "dream job this afternoon in the middle of a toxic situation (one pt in pain & the other experiencing TIA). So, I asked the lady if I could call her back after. Sadly, I got hooked with my patients and when I checked the time, it was 4:50pm and it was only the machine who answered my call. Now, what am I going to do? I already said "yes" to the other hospital and they even sent me the contract and some documents that I have to fill in and send back to them. This is crazy! Now, I have to wait until Monday to know if they'll give me a date for interview and so on.

I have mixed feelings now. :lol_hitti

This is going to be the longest weekend for you on record. It is very inconsiderate of those seeking staff for the 'dream job' to do this to you. Have you worked with them before? Do they always treat staff like this?

Nah. Never worked with them. I don't know what happened. I'll keep you all updated once everything get cleared.

This is like getting married in two weeks time when all of a sudden my ideal man who I had been looking for ages showed up in my doorstep. :bugeyes:

It took me a heck of a sweat apologizing to the other hospital. The good thing is, they really appreciated that I talked to them about this matter.
