Probation

Published

Hello all,

I’m an Ohio nurse looking for some advice on probation. I just hit month 6 of my two year probation. It’s been a pretty smooth road so far, yes annoying to check in every day and pay out of pocket, but I am still working full time. I was wondering if anyone had any input on the strictness of the timeline of the board? (I was two days late sending in my background check). I did know how closely they were monitoring the dates for that. Any advice would be appreciated. I wouldn’t want my lisense to be revoked over something small like that.

I am five months into my 2 year Ohio contract.

I really can't speak to how strict they are with things like a background check. My feelings are that if they see you didn't follow a deadline they may give you a warning or nail you. I think its so dependent on the 'case manager.'

Your choices are to point it out and apologize, no excuses just apologize. Or hope they don't do the math.

The 2 day late background check will probably sit somewhere unopened for 2 weeks. Sorry, I'm being uncharitable.

What do you mean by that?

I was being ugly about the various entities of 'probation.' And I apologize! We get reamed out if we are late on reports, but they've been days in calling me back on reports when I've said I had something I need to speak with them about. We are held to strict compliance, but they are not always Johnny on the spot with regard to support.

Oh I totally agree, I feel like there is no support what so ever. Initially it took my monitor days to respond to me, with no urgency what so ever and then have not heard from him since my initial interview. This whole process has made me fearful and anxious. I worry about not doing one small thing right and having a letter show up at my door that my lisense is being revoked (does that even happen?). And I feel like there is nowhere to turn to vent these frustrations. My lawyer is done with me and I keep this private from my work friends. But also, those that aren’t experiencing it can never understand the toll it takes on you.

May I ask why you are on probation? I am just starting this process and wondering how to minimize the damage. How were you able to continue to work? Did you get an attorney? How much do the drug tests cost etc..

I failed a random drug screen through my employer. I did everything they asked intensive outpatient therapy, alcohol and drug assesessments and screenings and then I came back to work within about a month. Do not speak with any one from the board without a lawyer, they are not your friend and they are trying to get you to confess. My lawyer worked out all the hard details and I got two year working probation. I was able to keep my job. But I do check in daily for screens which can be costly since in six months I have had my hair cut twice! And those tests run about 150$ a test. Normal urine tests are about 25$

Oh wow. I had no idea they would take your hair. That’s just excessive. Well I am on suspension from work. I’m going to fail my drug screen. I’m not diverting but it’s going to look like I am. Im just waiting to hear something. I’ve been off for a week now and still no word from HR. I would imagine they are attempting to build a case. Idk if they will offer me something like that or not. I have called an attorney. Good luck to you! Thank you for the information.

Of course! It’s all about what they can prove and how good of a lawyer you have. They have to really be able to prove diverting, regardless of what you test positive for. A lot of hospitals have employee assistance programs for this kind of stuff. But trust me the process of that is rigorous too. Good luck!
