I recently turned in my resignation to the hospital I work for. I worked med/surg days, but my husband is going to school at night for respiratory therapy so my child is left unattended a few hours in the evening before I get home. I was able to find a Monday thru Friday 8-5 job which will work out better for us. My DON just found out about my resignation and asked if I would be interested in PRN on weekends. I have thought about it, but the schedules are 6 weeks and I would be required to work a total of 5 shifts so for 5 weeks I would have only 1 day off. I know I could do consecutive weeks without a day off, but I would rather not do that. Part of me wants to do it and part of me doesn't. Also, with my new position I may at times have to work 4 hours on either Sat or Sun. This should be an easy decision, but I'm making it hard on myself (typical for me).

How badly do you need the added income as well as the added good will of this employer reference for the future? How good is your physical and mental stamina? Many people work six or more shifts a week but they are usually doing it out of dire necessity. You might tell your old boss that you are only willing to do it so long as you can handle the added fatigue factor. As soon as you determine that it is overload, you will resign. Make this a clear condition from the beginning and stick to it.
Thanks for your responses. I really appreciate the advice as family wasn’t much help. Thanks again! Probably won’t do it, the old job isn’t worth killing myself over. ?

I would offer them two shifts per month and see if they bite.
