Preparation recommendations??

Hi everyone,

I have just been accepted to a nursing program which will begin this summer. I am trying to compile a list of reading materials and suggestions for ways to prepare for nursing school.

I am excited but freaking out about knowing nothing re: the lingo, what to expect in school/clinicals...etc.

If anyone has any advice, good books, things to spend some time learning to ease my transition, etc...I would really appreciate it!

Thanks :)

Hi! congrats on getting into a program! I am 4 months away from completing an lpn program and the one thing that i think would have been helpful to study beforehand is medical terminology and abbreviations. I wouldn't go nuts on the abbreviations though, just learn the common ones. Other than that just make sure you dont totally forget all of the a&p your learned (if you've already taken that). Good luck and when you start just remember to relax and take one day at a time. :)

get a test success book, get used to questions that have all answers correct and choosing the best answer using nursing process. abbreviations don't hurt, start reading your textbook early. You will love the first semester!! =)

Know physiology. Its rather apparent which people in my class learned it and which didn't lol.

Test Success or an NCLEX test guide. You'll find helpful hints of how to answer test questions. Keep your A&P text book(s) as your nursing books won't go into as much detail...... the authors assume you know the stuff. If you can get books ahead of time, read up on doing physical assessments. Practice head to toe assessments on anyone that will allow. A stuffed animal or doll will usually suffice.

Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it! I feel good about term and physio, but will definitely review. I have a couple of NCLEX flashcard apps on my phone and will definitely get a test book. I just ordered the nursign dx handbook, so it sounds like I am on the right path :)
