Pregnancy and Nursing

You don't have to tell her right away, but make sure you don't let her find out from your coworkers. She should be the first one you tell at work. When the time comes, just tell her that you're pregnant and when you're due. It would be nice to reassure her that you intend to come back when your maternity leave is over.

I just wore my regular work shoes until my feet swelled too much at the end, then I wore my sneakers.

I agree with TazziRN, you can wait awhile to tell her but make sure you tell her before word starts going around.

I worked in a nursing home up until my 8th month with my daughter but i was too swollen to keep on, but i just wore regular tennis shoes. with my son i worked in pediatrics up until the day before he was born and i wore crocs most of the time.

The thing is I won't actually start working until I am probably 12-14 weeks and I'll probably be showing at that time...so I'm wondering if I should write her an email letting her know before I start, but I'm afraid to do that because I don't want her to resend her offer...even though she's technically not supposed to do that, people still do!

its a bit deceptive but yeah i would wait until after you are actually hired to tell. no they arent supposed to hire based on pregnancy, but having a bit of personal knowledge about they way those things typically go, they can come up with numbers of other reasons for not hiring you.

actually, depending on your height and build, there is a good chance you'll have no waist at 12-14 weeks, but may not look obviously pg, especially in scrubs.

Personally, as a preceptor, I need to know if you are pregnant. There are certain meds, illnesses, etc that may need to be avoided and I would need to work around that. I'd say something once you have a hire date and the papers are signed.

First of all Congrats on your pregnancy! When I first graduated nursing school I was 20 weeks pg. When I started working I was 25 weeks pg or so. I got hired into my RN job when I was about 15 weeks pg or so. I told my manager at my interview that I was pg. She didnt care. I only was planning on taking 6 weeks off and your preceptor should know cos you do need to stay away from certain things. I would tell your manager when you are a little further along tho. Maybe you could wait until after you take your NCLEX. They cannot tell you that you do not have a job after you tell them you are pg, that would be descrimnation.

As far as comfy shoes, I just had my second child 3 weeks ago, and I worked up until 4 days before I had her and I wore Dansko clogs, with the back, my whole pregnancy. I love those shoes. You do have to wear them in a bit. Also I would suggest getting a few scrub tops that button up in the front and a few long shirts, When you get to the end of your pregnancy not much fits you. I dreaded goign to work at the end of my pg cos i could not find anything that would fit my belly.
