Practicum - ER?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has experience of doing their practicum in the ER? Was there any advice that you have???? I don't want to go in there and feel silly for not knowing anything or not knowing meds that I should (I know there's so much that I don't know and I know I'll have a million questions!).

I'm not sure if I'd worded this correctly or asked my question right.

Thank you in advance! And I appreciate any feedback or insight :)

I did an elective preceptorship in the ED this summer and am hoping I can do my fall preceptorship there as well. It was an amazing experience! I learned more in those 90 hours than I did in all my other clinicals combined. Go for it!

If you can, get your ACLS done. It'll help a lot with some of what you need to know. Review shock types and treatments. Beyond that, watch, listen and learn! Collect notes! Good luck!

I did my practicum in the ED. I loved it. Practice your IV starts, catheters, cpr, calculations, blood drips. Just about everything. That's the joy of the ED, you never know what will come through those doors :)

Thank you everyone! I plan to get PALS and ACLS before I start so hopefully that will help me :) I appreciate the feedback and I'm excited!

Student preceptor here. Let me tell you, I don't expect you to know everything. I will keep asking you until you can't answer the question. ER is nothing like they teach you in school. Come prepared for anything, and when you don't know the answer say so. That is ok. But know where to find it. Medications, same thing. Thats why we have drug books. Come with running shoes and don't you ever say you don't want to do something. The more effort you put towards everything, the more cool stuff I will send you to
