Practice during nursing school?

I read some of the posts regarding practicing foleys, IVs, etc. on family members and such. So my question is, do nursing students get the supplies to practice at home? I am just curious. Thanks!

I cannot even begin to imagine why some would practice a foley on a family member at home??? IV sure maybe, but not a foley:lol2: And no, we were not given supplies for this.

Ok, thanks for the replies!

Don't know about the practicing part, but we were given the option of buying the supplies through the school.

We were required to buy supplies, but we also had to sign a waiver saying we would not practice on another human or animal.

we purchased our supplies from the school for that semesters lab. the only practice we got with foleys, ngs, dressings, etc was on plastic dummies. we had to sign a paper stating we would not practice on any human living or otherwise or animal living or otherwise. the realworld practice you get is during your clinical time. so if you hear a foley needs put in jump in and say i'll do it!!

We had supplies that we could take home. Of course, after practicing with them, they were no longer sterile, so I wouldn't have practiced on another human or animal with my equipment. Although, I did NOT have to sign a waiver stating that I would not. I did save an IV cath and kept it sterile for practicing on my dear husband.

I had some supplies left over for IV starts. We did practice IVs and injections on each other in clinical lab. My friend and fellow nursing student and I did one on each other about a week ago. It was fine, though I did blow her vein and felt a bit bad. I never had to sign anything saying I wouldn't practice on a human. During clinical lab at school I made a deal with another student that she could put an NG tube in me if I could do likewise. The instructor was fine with it and we did it during lab time. Ouch...

That's hardcore! Getting an NG tube is one thing that just makes my skin crawl. I mean, if my belly were full of gunk, maybe, but....yikes. Still, very good practice, I've only done it on a person that was unconscious.

I think you win for super student!

Does your school have a skills lab? IF so, use that. That is your best option. It is not adviseable to practice invasive nursing skills on anyone, whether family or not.

here in the philippines, you are partnered with someone and you practice on each other.

When I was in my senior year we had a clinical in the ER where we did all IV's and other treatments that came in. However, everyone wanted to get experience beofre having to do it in front of an instructor on a real person, so we all sort of snuck a catheter from the hospital during our other clinical rotations and either practised on each other or our Significant others. I know, I know, it was wrong, not just the fact that we stole but also the fact that we did it w/o discussing it with our professors. I also had an opportunity to practice on a coworker who was an RN during my summer externship.
