Post Lpn School

Published

After the stresses of LPN school and taking and passing the NCLEX on the first try I see no employers willing to hire new grad LPNs. Someone please tell me I didn't waste the last year of my life in LPN school to be denied the chance to gain the 1,2 0r 3 years experience that all the jobs I see are asking for. I have a MD compact state license and it seems as if I will not be able to practice nursing with it.

Please anyone tell me....where are the job opps for new LPNs.....am I the only one with this problem?

If you are in Maryland you shouldn't have any problem at all and the pay is pretty decent here also. Where have you applied?

I have applied to all the LPN openings I see in newspapers, gazettes, magazines, online and any hospital I can find in Maryland and Virginia. I have even registered with agencies and nothing has come through. Do you have any suggestions about where I should apply? Do u know a facility that hires new grads?

Have you had any interviews? I think I'm stronger in person than my resume might indicate so I like to meet the HR people or even better a nurse manager. I have friends that are LPNs who started as new grads at Bayview, Union and Kernan as well as all many different LTC facilities. If you are only sending resumes maybe you could pick a few centers near your home and stop in with a resume. Going to the job fairs is also a good way to get your smiling face noticed. Two of my friends got jobs by smoozing up recruiters at a fair who originally said they weren't interested in LPNs.

It can be harder to get hospital jobs of course but if you aren't even getting any nibbles in LTC there is a disconnect. Just keep trying to figure out what is happening and do not get discouraged. This is a great market for LPNs. As new grads a couple of years ago my classmates started out between $23-$28 an hour.

Order Advance Magazine for LPNs; a free subscription journal for LPNs. They regionalize their publications, so, if you get it, they should be mentioning places that are having job fairs in your area. Type in Advance Magazine in your browser, and search for the LPN one. Best of luck to you. I would be frustrated as well!

Great suggestion, I really enjoy this magazine.

I don't know if this is the right place to say this. I have been an LPN for many years, both Advanced and LPN2. But still an LPN. This means many things in different states.

My question is, why is the nursing shortage all R.N's. LPN's are a strong part of the nursing work force and we are more than glad to help. But every time they talk about nurses being in short demand, it is never about us. I am trained and pressured to do more and more every day, and am willing and able. LPN's are not in a shortage, we are underpaid and over used. Thanks for letting me vent
