Policy for SCDs

Does your facility require a doctor's order to apply SCDs on your patients in the OR?

The docs do not have to order them here. The patient's age, length of procedure, history, etc... are considered. If a doc wants them on all patients, it is listed on the top portion of their preference cards.

Thanks. Our hospital requires a doctor's order. But some docs act as if you're asking them to do surgery naked when you ask them to write the order.

Also require a doc order. Docs preference cards will usually say they want them. If the doc doesn't have the order written, we can use our nursing judgement. Most of our docs are pretty cool about it & I will tell the doc I'm writing a verbal order for them & please sign off on order when time allows. Only one doc gives grief about it. He/she doesn't like anything extra on anyone, even warm blankets. He/she is an arrogant SOB. So glad I hardly ever work with him/her & I certainly would never refer a friend or enemy to this surgeon.

We don't need an order.

Nor do we have policy regarding criteria for use so I'm working on that.

All other things being equal - procedure duration, medical hx, etc - at roughly what age do you think patients should wear them?
