Hello all,
I'm a newbie here. Lemme explain my situation. I completed my masters in clinical nutrition from UK n bachleors from India. I'm planning to move to states shortly. My qualification is not that valid in usa, so planning to become a nurse.
1.Can i apply for ADN course in community college while i reside in india. I recently came to know theres a huge wait period for admission. Can't think of another 2 years for ADN plus 1 year pre requiste n god knows about nclex? I'm upset n worried..
2.Which option will be better for me. join for a cna course and work fulltime or join for ADN and work as a CNA after 2 semester study.
3.If i made my mind to join cna course n later when it comes to apply for cna jobs, 'm worried about my masters degree. Can they reject me coz 'm overqualified for the designation.
I need your help n advise. Thanks in advance. I love all nurses.:redbeathe

That is a darn good question. I'm going to say, "most probably"- that is the purpose of a student-visa, afterall- but I would talk to the admissions offices of CCs where you think you may be relocating.

You can always be rejected. I think rejection for "over-qualification" is unlikely, since (to the best of my knowledge) India and the US have no licensure reciprocity. You'll simply be someone moving to a new place, and working their way onward and upward. Good luck!

There is a sheet of paper all Human Resource departments use called an I-9. You will have to be able to show the ability to be legally employed in the US. This means you need some sort of Visa.
I doubt anyone will care about you being "overqualified", but you will need strong command of English.
Past that, the only thing you need for CNA is a class that lets you take the test to be listed on that state's registry. This usually includes no felonies, a TB skin test, and valid Healthcare Provider CPR. From experience, it DOES NOT matter where you get CNA from - only that you have the certificate. So, go with the most reasonable costing class. You will have to take the class here.
That said, I have heard a lot of third hand information on various job board forums about agencies bringing in folks from other countries. It is not common in my area, but most of this seems to be coming out of California. However, this is not for CNA but bigger things like Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. CNAs are always hired locally.
BUT... if you have a Masters, even from India, you will probably not be challenged by CNA.

Hi :)
1)I don't know if a community college will consider you if you are not even in the country! I had issues when I just moved out-of-district. If 20 miles out-of-district freaked them out... I'm pretty sure they'll have issues with you being in India.
I suppose you need to contact the school which you are considering.
I do know that the cc's usually take in-district students first.
I don't think you can avoid a long wait.
2)You can take a CNA class and work as a CNA while waiting to get into nursing school.
If you can get a job as a CNA in a hospital, the hospital may even help you pay for your nursing education.
Thanks to my employer's help, I only paid a grand total of $1000 for my entire education.
3)Your degree is not in nursing, so they should not reject you. There are CNAs out there with very impressive educational backgrounds (and some not so much...).
The big thing is to communicate with any school you wish to attend.
There may be some prerequisite classes they will expect you to have done before they consider you... even if you already have a masters.
Only your college of choice can give you more specific information.
Cheers and good luck!
Thank you so much for your reply. (Rob 72, ctmed n hygiene queen)
One of my friend got rejected for his masters degree. since then 'm worried (Course itself is very expensive. around 1300 USD.)
I dont need to obtain a work permit to work in states. 'm joining my spouse who is a citizen.
Please lemme know the average wait time to get into CC. ( both CNA & ADN)
Thanks again for all your help n advices.

What makes you think your clinical nutrition degree is invalid in the US? Have you done the research?
Is it valid in US ? Not sure. Haven't done much research on that matter. You gave me some hope. Thanks juli. I thought i should join a dietetic/ nutrition course all over again to get the appropriate state licence.
Is there any food service jobs or any state licencing exam like nclex for nutrition. If i can get some nutrition job i b able to manage my tuition fees.
