please help: are nursing schools really THAT competitive?

Uh, 3.6 is good!! Thats awesome. Dont think thats not a great GPA. By the sound of your post you must be in California with me. Its depressing I know.

You could maybe retake a class or two to raise your GPA if you dont get in the first time, or be willing to move to a less competitive area. Im really of no help Im just as scared as you but have a back up plan that your happy with just in case it takes a while to get in. Im planning to keep taking sciences (chem, physics) so I can apply to other professional schools if need be like physicians assistant or physical therapy. that way you've got options, always have options!

all i have to say is YES THEY ARE THAT COMPETITIVE!!! What area do you live in? Try maybe private schools. You do have a great GPA. Good Luck

I am planning on applying to 4...i hope that is enough. one of the schools expects about 700 applications but can only offer 40 seats. the other school expects 800 applications but can only offer 80 seats. i can't recall the other two schools but I know they are steep too.

I am deathly afraid of being rejected by all 4 because it just seems too impossible to actually get into any of them. are all BSN programs as highly competitive as these? (I live in New York, by the way.) I'm not a strong applicant. My GPA is only 3.6 and will probably go down after this semester.

what should i do?? please help. any feedback/advice is appreciated! :wink2:

I'm a nursing student at NYU and they accept 30% - 33% of all the applicants that apply. Of course, you have to fullfill their requirement first.

I feel the same way that you do, DISCOURAGED!!! Everyone that I speak to make it sound impossible to get in. I am in NJ and have an interview tomorrow with Helene Fuld. I am trying to remain possitive but it is really hard. I just hope that they ley me know fairly quickely and don't string me along for months. I hate waiting!!!!!

Yes, most programs are very competitive. However, don't let the number of applicants intimidate you. You have a great GPA and you don't know how many of those applicants will be rejected for other reasons, don't meet the entire requirements, or will even accept the position when called. Some decide not to go into it or found a place elsewhere and even though the number may be quite low it helps

The other option is go to a private school. Yes, you have to fork out big bucks (I have gone this route) but it is well-worth it IMO if you don't want to be in a waiting list.

I say don't give up, apply like you said and if push comes to shove and you don't get in, then consider the private route. Good luck

My school received 200 applications this year and accepted 86. GPA and ACT scores are considered when making the selections.

I'm hoping to get in when I apply this March. The longer it takes to get in, the longer I have to stress over maintaining a high GPA!

I live in Queen, New York too. NYU does have a undergraduate BSN program. You can check out their website (http://www.nyu.edu/nursing) to find out more information. If you want to save some $$$, take all prerequisites at any community college and trasfer. A lot of my classmates have done the same thing. Another option, apply for "CCTOP" scholarship and I think the amount is around $20,000. If you need more info., let me know!

I don't know about the BA programs, but the ADN programs are pretty competitive. It seems like the more intense the class, the more intense the nursing students in it are.
