my plan for nursing

I am 28 in the same boat. It will take me 4 years to earn an AAS in Nursing and be an RN. I have 2 kids and a hubby and I babysit my niece during the day. I often wish I would have just done it when I was younger... but at least I am old enough not to waste the opportunity I have now! I will be 32 by the time I am a Registered Nurse and 34 by the time I can start working toward my goal of being a forensic nurse.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Health Science but knew my junior year of college, I wanted to become a nurse. Thank goodness that majority of my classes were transferred and I have only 3 classes left until I get accepted in to the nursing program. I'm kinda unsure if I can work a full time job at the hospital and do my clinicals too. I don't want to drop to part time so this has been very difficult to deal with. I know that nursing is my purpose and I will try to do my best to achieve my goals. Good luck to you all.

I just started nursing school Aug. 17th and I've already cut my hour from 36 to 31. I work nights in a hospital from 6:30 pm to 7 am every Friday and Saturday and from 12pm to 7pm on Tuesdays. Basically I'm in class M-W with my 6 hour clinical on Thursday. It has been a struggle and I'm just getting started. I'm already considering cutting back my hours even more. I'm tired all of the time and my mind isn't functioning enough to retain the information that I do have time to go over.

Not saying this would happen to you but it's definitely something to think about when deciding whether or not to work while in school. I HAVE to work, I have no choice! Because I'm a transfer student, I don't have a GPA to use for scholarships and because I'm a second degree student I'm not eligible for grants and have almost reached my max in stafford loans so basically I can't get excess aid to hold me over. Besides that, I want to keep my medical benefits.

Thanks for the insight. I think I'm going see if I can change my 12 hour shifts to the weekends (when I start) so I could focus more on clinicals and class. Congrats on getting in. Alot of people who I have graduated with are having a hard time going back to school since the financial aid is very limited. Thanks again for responding!
