Well, what do you know about PICO so far? There are a lot of examples on the interwebz. Your school likely has lots of free online journals that you can use to research cord blood banking. Usually they're accessible through logging into the library website.

PICO stands for: Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome.

PICO is a a type of research topic, but not all research topics fit the PICO framework. Some topics are great for general research papers, but not for PICO papers. In order to use cord blood banking as the basis for a PICO question, you'll need to identify a population and an intervention related to cord blood banking or the use of cord blood banking that has a control group or an alternative intervention for comparison purposes.

Cord blood banking may be too general of a topic for this paper. I'd suggest looking into diseases or conditions that banked cord blood is most commonly used to treat. Then compare the outcomes of patients treated using banked cord blood to those who were treated using another method.

What made you want to study some aspect of cord blood banking? Tell us about that. It may help you clarify your thoughts.

Welcome to AN!

To formulate questions in Evidence Based Practice and use the PICOT format.

Quote
PICOT stands for:
  • Population/ Patient Problem: Who is your patient? (Disease or Health status, age, race, sex)
  • Intervention: What do you plan to do for the patient? (Specific tests, therapies, medications)
  • Comparison: What is the alternative to your plan? (ie. No treatment, different type of treatment, etc.)
  • Outcome: What outcome do you seek? (Less symptoms, no symptoms, full health, etc.)
  • Time: What is the time frame? (This element is not always included.)

Your PICOT question should fall under one of these types:

  • Therapy/Prevention
  • Diagnosis
  • Etiology
  • Prognosis

If you want to give it twist, you could focus on examination of factors that increase Cord Banking (desired outcome). What has your lit search turned up? (hint, hint, hint).
