Pharm. Tech going into LPN

Published

Currently a Pharmacy Tech working in a distribution pharmacy and looking into going to school to be an LPN as my main goal is to be a nurse. Only problem is I'm looking to relocate to Florida within the next year so I don't know if I should wait to start LPN school until I move to FL and wait another year to be considered in-state for cheap tuition or hold off on the move and be stuck here in IL (which I so hate) and do the LPN program here and transfer it. What would be the easiest? Looking for some advice before I go investing any money into furthering my education.

I would say wait until you move that way you won't have to worry about getting re-licensed in another state once you do move, and yes you will get a break most likely on the tuition which helps also. Good luck, I am also a pharm tech going to LPN school in September. :]

I am also a cert pharmacy tech. I start Aug 20th sooo excited:)

Awesome! Good luck!

Hello,

I'm not a tech but I would advise the same as above. Wait, so that you'll be able to get instate tution. I'm not sure what out of state price is but here(Ft. Laud.) at my local tech school LPN is under $5k.

Hope all works out for the best with you! Take care!

By the way to you and above posters: it great that you all have something else(career) to fall back on. Smart move, even if it was just a stepping stone to the next level.

ASPIRING2BGREAT, thanks for your opinion. I will most definitely hold out until the move. I totally went to get my Cert. Pharm Tech as a stepping stone to get into the medical field as I was pregnant with my son at the time and needed to get into a career after having him and now I'm just ready to move onto the next step of getting my LPN then bridging to RN .. hopefully :)

Wow Pharm Techs!!!!

! And I was just looking at the LoooooooooNG list of drugs and all the implications and wondering... HOW do we eat this elephant!????!!!

Does Pharm Tech mean you KNOW all the drug stuff already? What study tips can you give us drug-novices?

Study suffixes. It helps a lot if you come across a medication you're not familiar with but looking at the suffix you can determine what class the medication falls under.

e.g.)

lam/pam - benzodiazepine

cillin - penicillin

mycin - macrolide antibiotics

olol - beta blockers .. etc

I would also recommend waiting until you move to go to LPN school. That way, you won't have to pay to take your license & if the school you choose has a good reputation in your area, you would be more desirable to employers than a new grad from out of state. Make sure you check out your states board of nursing website to find a list of schools & their nclex pass rates. That's how I chose my school. Good luck!

think you should wait until you move to Fl so that there wont be an issue with getting re-licensed, transfering, and also wasting your time and money. I would go to a community college and maybe take some prerequisites for RN so when you are done LPN school, you can have less classes, good luck
