Perioperative Training Program for New Grad

The only perioperative program that I am aware of in the Portland area is at Mt. Hood Community College. I don't know anything about the program. I've just heard it exists. I tried to find it on line but was unsuccessful. It may be best to call the college and inquire directly.

I think they (MHCC) only offer this course beginning fall term each year. But you'll have to call to double check. Legacy used to (not sure if it still exists) offer an internship. You have to be pretty flexible though as they assign you to the hospital where they want you which means if you are on-call you have to be there within 30 minutes. I didn't feel it was feasible for me to do that since I live way out on the eastside (Mt Hood Med Ctr would be the closest). They told me that alot of people stay either w/friends or at a hotel in Portland when they're on-call. That was crazy to me, so I declined the offer. Other than that it sounded like a good thing, 6 months of schooling plus you get paid.

They changed their internships recently - cut out a month and a half in it. Claim that it'll give you the same experience as an RN who has been working for 18 months.

I have taken the OR class at Mt. Hood Community College. It gives you a basic understanding of scrubbing and circulating in the OR. They offer it in Fall and Spring terms. The class is called RNX27 (plus the lab which is RNX27L) and it is listed in the surgical technology section when you are looking for courses on the MHCC website.

I took the OR class at Mt Hood and frankly, my OR preceptorship taught me everything I needed to know. This class may look good on the resume, but I couldn't say I learned anything new in it. I think it would be good for RNs with no surgical experience at all though.
