Perceptorship

Specializes in ICU, Mother/Baby.

Im about to pick my perceptorship for my last semester of school:yeah:

Im torn between a few places. Where do you think is a great area to do a perceptorship in? I am leaning towards critical care. Thanks for your responses!

Specializes in ER.

you must do what works for you, and what you desire the most! but in my opinion, i would start out in medsurg or tele to solidify the skills i already know, because during school clinicals we have been taught at the medsurg level. now is not the time to try something super challenging, because of the danger of falling on your face..remember, that we are being evaluated by our preceptor and her say in things influences if we pass or not. also, she is not there to train us, shes not our instructor, but to guide us (this is what we were told, at least). she will help us with time organization, order transription, talking to doctors, doing stuff we didnt get time to do in clinical like admitting, discharging etc.

i enjoyed all of my rotations and had a hard time deciding where to go. my first choice was er, but then i got to thinking about the above, and honestly, i didnt feel ready yet to go to er. so off to tele i go. give yourself a lil self evaluation. do you have fast, super sharp critical thinking skills? are all of your skills top notch and have you done all your skills many, many times? are you already an lvn with experience? if you go to the unit, you wont be doing everything the nurse does because you can only do what you were taught to do in school, so you would mostly be observing. also, should you decide to go to the unit as a hired rn, you would have some experience under your belt at least (hardly, but some), since most ccu, icu, er want at least a years worth of med surg.

anyway, whatever you decide, have fun at your preceptorship! and enjoy it!!!

I'm doing my last two semesters in critical care. I've already done a preceptorship in oncology so I'm excited to move on to something more intense. :)

go where you want to work after graduation. i highly recommend an icu
