Hi everyone, i need help with this pediatric calculation..
A patient who weighs 176lbs has a prescription of dopamine hydrochloride(intropin)2mcg/kg/min. The drug is available at 400mg in 250ml of DSW.How many ml/hr would you admonister. Write your answer as a whole number.

Determine kg 176 lb / 2.2 lb/kg = 80 kg. Lbs cancel out.
Next
To determine ml / hr:
250 ml
------ X
400 mg
1 mg
----- X
1000 mcg
3 mcg / kg / min X
80 kg X
60 min / 1 hr =
9 ml / hr
Write this whole equation out then cancel out the units to get ml/hr.
NOte 1 mg = 1000 mcg
60 min = 1 hour
and
2.2 lbs = 1 kg

I still don't understand how you get 9ml/hr

I guess I need to brush up on med calculation because I got 6mL and here is how:
1lb=2.2kg 176lb/2.2=80kg
Order: 2mcg/kg/min
Supply: 400mg/250mL
80kg x 2mcg/kg/min= 160mcg/min
1mg=1000mcg
400,000mcg x 160mcg/min
------------ ------------
250mL x (mL)
x=0.1ml/min 1hr=60min
0.1ml x 60 = 6mL/hr
Sorry I accidentally used 3 mcg instead of 2 mcg. This message setup doesn't lend itself well to mathematical formulas.
to be honest, i still don't understand how you guys got those answers.

Same here. I have a hard time in calculations specially when it needs some conversions.I am trying to understand this.

This link may help. What I have found is that many nursing instructors have different ways of setting up problems or with wording, but they are asking you to solve for the same thing. Practice each step and find out what you are solving for. There are certain types of problems that I have had to practice several times before it clicked for me. Once you figure out what it is that you are solving for, it is so much easier. Break the problem up. I know it is confusing, but I hope this helps. I do not use dimensional but by looking at the problems on this link, I was able to figure out what I was solving for.

Oops. More practice problems with answers, just keep paging down till you find what you need.

check out the student forums (assistance forum) as there are a couple of maths threads which should help you work things out

I suggest you visit the nursing student assistance forum then go to drug calculations under the STICKY thread .. there you will find several pedia and adult drug computations.
