Pediatric Stethoscope

Hello! I am going to be graduating in May 07 and recently took a job in the PICU as a GN. I am looking for a Pediatric stethoscope because I figure I will definately need one, right? Does anyone know of any good place to get them? I currently have an adult Littmann stethoscope and really like it so I'd like to stick with that brand. Any help would be appreciated with suggestions!:monkeydance:

Just Google and price shop. I couln't believe how expensive they have gotten in the last few years though! Ebay sometimes has overstock deals or gently used peds scopes. I ended up buying an ADC Adscope that is the same quality for much less money. With a little coaxing the Littman eartips fit since I only like those! Or, you can add an ADC head to Littmann tubing and earpieces, if you were going to get rid of the adult scope anyway, I know someone who did that. I got me ADC through Amazon for the best price I saw, you may want to check Littmann prices for their affiliates, too.

My personal opinion is that you can do a much better assessment on an adult or big kid with a pedi steth than you can do on an infant or toddler (or even cachexic adult) with an adult steth. Plus, it hurts less when you bend to pick something off the floor and it hits you in the teeth :)

allheart has really good prices on Littman peds scopes. I would advise against getting a high dollar Littmann that isn't designed for peds, but that comes with "an adapter" because they really dont' sound so hot with that on.

But you might want to check with the unit you are going to work on before you purchase one. Many units are starting to put a scope at every bedside now because of infection control, and don't want you bringing yours in from home.

I had a littman adult steth during school and bought a pedi littman once i started in PICU. I love it. I notice it especially when I have isolation kiddos and am forced to use the crappy isolations steths that our hospital provides. Can't hear a blasted thing.

i start in the PICU next week and my dear fiance purchased a littman cardiology III for my birthday a few months ago. it's got a two-sided bell. do you think this will suffice? i mean, it's super expernsive, but i am super-nervous and worried about everything at this point. :sofahider

Thanks, AliRae, I thought I was the only one. I know I have a hearing loss, but those cheapie things are crummy!!! Love my Littman peds and I also have a Littman infant scope that's awesome.

jamonit,

You will be fine. I have the same one and it works very well on peds pts. I love it and people who have used it can't believe how well it works.

I'm doing my senior practicum in peds next spring, and am planning on getting a Littman pediatric steth before then.. does anyone know if they come in the new ocean blue color? I haven't been able to find any online so far..

That would be a no. 3M hasn't started making the peds steth in ocean blue yet, just the Classic II SE and the Select. Perhaps by the time your senior practicum rolls around they will have had enough requests that they're making them.
