My question is this: Which do you recommend, a blackberry or an iphone with apps for FNP school? Just wondering what you all think.

For the phone for the job it depends on the phone service. At our hospital Verizon tower on the roof so the phone works everywhere but the middle of the tunnel to the childrens hospital (even radiology). Iphone have to stand by a south facing window to get any reception. On the other hand if you get good ATT reception then the IPHONE has better software for a student. I find that as I get more "experienced" the less I need. I used to have a lot of software on my palm. Now I just have the free version of epocrates on my BB and I get by just fine. When I was a student it was palm and skyscape. Now it seems to be Iphone and epocrates.

Iphone/Itouch and epocrates will take care of just about all your needs. As a 4th semester student I waffled for a long time about what to get and finally pulled the trigger in the 3rd semester after my preceptor asked me how I kept up without one. I told her that it was all in my head and she didnt like that response so I showed up the next clinical with PDA in hand. I tried out a friends palm and found it not even close to user friendly to get set up on your computer and downloading to mini disks for updates and synching was always a hassle. Apple has a rep for being user friendly and in this case it is absolutely true. During class lectures I sit there following along with Epocrates to see if it agrees with the lectures and what key words I have to use to find the info so later on I am quick to find what I need. Good luck.

I will probably be switching to Blackberry in Oct. of 2010 due to contract obligations and my cheapness in not wanting to give ATT any more money than they earn. I have used Epocrates for several years but, currently considering changing to Skyscape a service which cost more. However, the information contained is more complete information http://www.skyscape.com/estore/ProductOverview.aspx. I hope this helps. i currently use a Centro and will change due to the keys being so small.

I have had a Palm TX for over 2 years. Foolishly I bought tons of programs and found tons of free downloads. Many of them I never used. There are some free programs you will probably want to find like a BMI calculator and the CDC immunization guidelines, for example. Otherwise, the free version of epocretes was the program I used the most. Now that I am in practice, I use the epocretes deluxe version the most, though I depend on it less everyday. Good luck!
