Pay at COT

From my understanding the military pay days are every 1st and 15th. COT starts March 6th or 9th, I can't remember. I know it'll probably take 2 weeks or longer to set up direct deposit, but when I do get paid is it a full pay check for being there from beginning march to the 15th or is it a partial sum. Also i read somewhere your base pay is that of an E-5. Are you only paid the base pay or did it also include allowances.

The E5 pay is only for those attending BOT. They do not get commissioned until the end of their 12 week course. Since we get our commission before we enter COT we are paid at that rank. We will be paid from 9 March on...so it will be a partial month.

There are actually two different issues here: How much and when. Regardless of how much money you are supposed to receive the military in notoriously bad at initially paying you on time and for the correct amount. It often takes them a while to get everything in the system and this will often delay your pay...initially. IMHO...you should count on your pay being either late or incorrect for the first couple of pay periods.

From what everyone has said about being delayed pay I'm trying to save enough to be fine if I don't get paid during COT and 2 weeks after. Unfortunately both me and my wife are going to COT at the same time, so I have to save double. I'm just trying to figure out how much I'll have after is said and done.

From paying for everything at COT, student loans, car, moving to another state, rent deposits and utility deposits, everything is adding up. I know the air force reimburses you some of these things, but actually having the money to do everything and then wait for the military to reimburse you is near impossible. I just got a quote from Pods.com to store my belongings while at COT then move it from San Antonio, TX to Vallejo, California for $2900

Once you commission and get your official orders, you are immediately eligible for the military to come and move your belongings even if you will be TDY enroute. I am going to do a partial DITY and only worry about the small fragile and irreplaceable goods. It is also going to save us a couple of thousand dollars in storage and moving costs from TN to NV.

Also, I just contacted Sallie Mae about my student loans. They can do a military deferment since you will be active duty. You simply fill out a form and fax it back to them with a copy of your orders. You can specify how long you want the deferment for.

Hope this helps!

jmaverick.... I think you need more info. The military will move you. They pick up your household belongings and will move them to your first assignment. The storage fee is not something you need to pay. Are you really planning on setting up your household while at NTP? I don't think most do as it is just a temporary assignment.

I figure that I need to save at least 1 month worth of bills, plus travel money and apartment fees to get set up. It will catch up eventually. But I'm a planner too and plan for the worst, while hoping for the best.

I've heard the military will move you but i don't know the process. Such as if I store it with a local storage facility other than the military, and the military is supposed to move it, will they send someone to pack from the storage facility into a moving truck and drive it to me in California.

Mindinphx...my wife and I are both going in with experience so luckily we get to bypass NTP and go straight to our first duty station. I remember not long ago I found a site that talks a bit about moving, weights limits, etc. Anyone know of sites explaining this.

I do not think that they will be able to retrieve from storage without a person (power of attorney) there to release it. They should be able to pick the household goods up before you leave for COT though. They will hold the items in california until you arrive and find housing. Once you get your official orders, contact the local TMO to set up pick up. Your recruiter should be able to give you the number to contact. TMO should be able to answer your other questions.

Here is one website I found with a little information: http://www.militaryhomesforsale.com/military_pcs.html

You will not have to pay for storage of your household goods, so that's a moot point. The military will store your belongings for the duration of the time you're at COT plus I believe it was for thirty days after you arrive at your first base. You also do not pay to move your stuff - the military picks up the tab. You never even see a bill.

The military deferment of student loans is for a maximum of four years, and interest will accrue during that time. BUT - I would defer them if you're going to get the payoff anyway, because it's stupid to pay it when they're going to. Request a deferment for one year because it will take about sixty days after you get to your first station for those loans to get paid.

Also - YOUR PAY WILL BE SCREWED UP. Somewhere on this site there's a very long post I did about how jacked up the whole pay process is at COT - read it, read every word of it, and please keep in mind it's exactly what happened to everyone.

I FINALLY GOT A CORRECT PAYCHECK THIS PAY PERIOD, and I went on active duty 14 October!

Carolinapooh,

Thanks so much for all your posts! You have been of soooo much help to me as I try to navigate through all this stuff! I think I read the one about the pay about 4 times.
