Pathophysiology

Pathophysiology isn't required for my ADN program either. I took it last semester though and kept my book, so hopefully it will help me put some pieces together when I start NS this fall.

its a GREAT book. breaks everything down by diseases and has all nursing processes / implementations ect + comes with a disc for the PC for help also =]

It makes me see what the problem is with and not getting positions and academia forcing the issue of BSN. It's a shame really.....I can only shake my head.

How can a nursing program justify not having pharmacology and pathophysiology in their program so they can turn out the best nurses they can......shameful in their greed.

I was an ASN years ago and it was required. Pharmacology, pathophysiology, legalities and ethics, microbiology, biochemistry, and statistics/advanced math as well as A&P and advanced A&P besides the required English/electives.

Wow....Like I said I can only shake my head in wonder and disappointment. Take pathopyhsiology/pharmacology...it will make school make a whole lot more sense.

I dont understand it either! I am a PCT in a hospital and I am currently in LPN school, during my PCT orientation I had girls who were RN students and asked me WHY I was taking pharm?! I asked them how did they not take it and they told me "teachers incorperated it" I think it makes WAYYY more sense to take it as a class IMO

Not in my experience. I just finished it as my first class prior to taking any other nursing courses and I couldn't figure out half of the stuff the book was talking about! I think I spent just as much time on Wikipedia as I did in the textbook. Thank goodness they'll be reteaching us everything we need to know!

Pharmacology is required for the program and I did take that before nursing school even started. I was thinking about taking patho next summer but after reading this I definatly will. Besides its going to be required for the bachelor program anyway and it will probably transfer over so I will take it next summer. My friend has a patho book she is going to lend me and I will use that as a supplement for the rest of my classes.

Our program required us to take Patho & Pharm BEFORE even being accepted into the program. I personally thought this was a great advantage because it serves as a foundation for a lot of the material we cover that first semester and semesters to come, especially for Med-Surg and Critical Care. I would absolutely recommend taking it even if it's not required (which I don't understand why). I loved that class and am excited to take Advanced Patho in NP school!

I never realized that some ADN programs didn't require it. I'm even more surprised that some don't offer a pharm class?? I assume it's incorporated into the curriculum, hopefully. But I still think Patho & Pharm need to be taken as a course themselves as opposed to being incorporated into the other material.

In my area all BSN programs require it but not the ADN programs. I think it is very helpful, hence my name lol

Patho is not a separate class or a pre-req in my ADN program. It is integrated into the program, so we learn it as we go. I'm not sure how other schools do it, but we have to turn in a detailed patho report with every care plan. Just because a school doesn't offer Patho 101 doesn't mean the students aren't learning it. :)

We do that with our careplans as well but our patho class was an upper level very in depth class which I think has been very helpful in my nursing courses. I know pharm is like that too, some schools don't require it just integrate it into the program and boy do I wish ours did that! I hated pharm
