Opinions please!

I am looking at potential nursing schools and I have a question that I would like to

ask of those who have either taken or are preparing to take the NCLEX.

Would you consider applying to a nursing school that has a 79-80% pass rate on the

NCLEX?

I went to an Open House at the school and I really liked the staff and spoke honestly with the current students. They all said that it was an extremely hard curriculum and

that you get out of it what you are willing to put into it. I guess that would be the case with any nursing school....

Have you looked at any other places? My school had a very high passing rate on the boards. that is one of the reasons I chose it. I might consider it but I think I would look around a little first.

This isn't my first choice. I am actually on the waiting list at my school of choice but

am pretty sure that I will not be called up. I don't want to keep waiting around to start

my nursing education, so I am exploring all of my options. Thanks.

That does sound a little low. I am not sure what the averages are but the community college I am going to (not in the nursing program yet) has a pass rate in the low 90's. Then again maybe that is why they have such a long wait list.

I would consider it. My school has a pretty good pass rate, but that wasn't my main reason for going. If it had a 80% I would have still chosen this school. I don't look at percentages, I know me. I know I can pass any test that is put in front of me. If you are a good test taker go for it. Study study study for the NCLEX. If you're not the best test taker then maybe this school isn't for you. But I think I would really consider it rather than putting off school for a few years. Good luck, don't let it scare you away if you like everything else about!!

That is my thought pattern also but I didn't want to come off as being arrogant. Since returning to school, I have proven to be a very good student. I study very hard and have a pretty nice gpa. As for tests, I have never haven a problem. I am actually very good at taking tests. I truly believe I can be successful at this or any program.

I don't want to make a decision out of desperation. I just don't think I can wait another year to start. I also think my husband, kids, and puppy are tired of hearing me whine about school. I just want to start.

I'm sure this may not be new news however, the NCLEX is a test UNLIKE any you will experience in school. Some schools give you more NCLEX-like questions on their exams than others but don't let that fool you. That said, you can get an excellent preparation for the NCLEX through an NCLEX prep class such as Kaplan, so I really wouldn't make the NCLEX pass rate your only criterion for selection of schools. For example in my area, a certain community college in the suburbs has the highest pass rate (100% actually), but the clinical options are sub optimal (no big teaching hospitals, etc). Other, larger institutions with lower pass rates have national ranking, more resources and better clinical placements but less personalized TLC. So I guess what I'm trying to say, in a rather long winded kind of way, is, determine what the (say) top 5 most important characteristics are to you, and then pick the school that posesses the most. Just my .02 cents and then some. :) And sorry about the poor grammar... my brain is fried on NCLEX studying.
